Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Branch crutch. I have a pear tree that needs one of those before it breaks. What kind of saw did you use to cut the brace and is it available in the U.S.? That's really nice.

  2. Yup, I use the same method on my pear trees, I use crepe myrtle branches as they grow fast and straight around here. As most of these fruits are domesticated, they tend to need a hand here and there…….gg.

  3. I suppose if you are expecting high winds a tripod made with 3 straight poles lashed together would be sturdy. Not fruit tree related; when I was a kid I recall Dad making a tripod out of logs to pull the engines out of cars to work on them!

  4. Can't thank you enough for your videos. They provide tips but also inspiration. I have a two year old persimmon tree that has its first fruit and sure enough it is precariously bending from its main branch. And sure enough I just trimmed a couple mature trees in the backyard. Perfect! Thanks amigo!

  5. This will work until the wind blows. The limb will sway sideways and the support stick will kick out. The support will also rub away the bark causing a wound on the limb. I speak from experience for both. A tripod will work better, but is more work. Also, where the limb meets the support needs to have a soft material in the crotch to prevent injury.
