So often we get hung up on numbers in fertilizer and the idea that a higher NPK is better, when in reality a higher NPK could be doing more damage than good. In this episode I explain why a 1-1-1 is better than a 30-30-30

As far as I know (and I'm almost sure of it) plants don't take only what they need, but take anything you give them. Actually, they take up water. And anything that is inside of it. That's why they get burned if taken in higher concentrations.
Here's a question I have on how to solve the overfertilization problem: Is there a way to make the fertilizer not just bioavailable, but retained in the soil? If not, it seems to me that overfertilization will ALWAYS be a problem because unless the plant roots are picking up nutrients from EVERY cubic inch of the soil, there will always be some soil where the nutrients are not being picked up.
I'm guessing there's a natural way to retain the nutrients and slowly release them, but if that's insufficient, perhaps they could develop slow-release fertilizers.
Can't have a rational discussion (critique) about fertilizer concentrations/ratios without addressing the application rates. Almost always right there on the package. 30-30-30 is arguably better than a 1-1-1 USUALLY because it's so much cheaper and equally effective when diluted properly and applied at the correct rate.
Specifically addressing the title of your video: all other additional micronutrients volume/percentages equal, wouldn't it make sense to choose the 30-30-30 (or an 8-8-8) over the 1-1-1, if the price per common unit is better? Then simply apply the 30-30-30 in a proportionately reduced amount? Ignore the benefits of organic fertilizer for this scenario.
would you rather pay 10.00 for a 30-30-30 bag of fertilizer or 10.00 for a bag a 1-1-1 ? why not buy the 30-30-30 and just use less of it?
i know nothing about gardening, and yet listening to you explain so welll, i am surprise i am getting what you are saying… Thank you so much for this video !!
I just test my garden soil the Ph is 6.5 and the other nutrient's are registering low . the garden space is approximately 14' X 6 how much 1-1-1 would a guy add in the spring to see results??
Thanks for a great video. Have you experienced JADAM ultra low cost gardening methods?
This years pumpkin record was grown on 1-1-1
Well done Vid!! Thanks for putting this out there!!
So, the 1:1:1 fertiliser, what are the remaining 97% that we buy?
This was a good explanation of NPK and how confusing it is on bags. – Rick
I rather buy 100 lb of 30-30-30 n need 1:9 of fertilizer:soil to get 3-3-3 vs buying 1000 lbs ,. Too. Heavy
Maybe add a 10% dose of 30-30-30 and a 500% 5-5-5 get a good base and when you notice they're doing good in the peak of their health give them a boost
Thank you for that explaination
Great info.
You just answered about 100 questions.
Besides 420 soil I used 20-20-20. Not much of harvest this year. Many zucchini squash cucumbers bee small or mostly died off. No plumbs or apricot Very minimal nectarines peaches gave Fruits very small Thank you lesson learned
Wouldnt be a hydroponic method then easier to adjust? as you give the nutrients in the water solution and leave it? would be ok to add a tomatoes pellets fertilizer in the water container of a wicking system? cheers
Okay, so that's why I need to keep fertilizing my greens because my liquid gold is leaching out.
Dude!
I am good friends with a chicken farmer and have a never ending supply of well composted poo. My garden has over produced for yrs, a little lime and plant compost are gifts from God.
Thanks, I learn a lot from you and my garden is doing better.
well articulated topic.
You are absolutely correct as an experienced farmer I will tell you you are correct. I have been farming for over 40 years are use organic material, and synthetic fertilizers in moderation and my Crops are doing fabulous
I ordered organic fertilizer 20-20-20, instruction says to apply it only 1 or 2 times per season.
That makes a lot of sense
1 lb of fertilizer 2 lb of sand you just made a 15-15-15
keep cutting down
Just buy a 30-30-30 and dilute it to 1-1-1
