  1. The Ball jars in America are terrible quality now. I bought some at an auction a few years ago from a lady who retired and didn't want to can anymore. Her jars are older and solid – they do not break easily. You buy them off the shelves now and one pressure can can break them. They are not sturdy. I've been eyeing the Weck jars for a while, but did not try due to cost. It looks like preserving jams, jellies and pickling are the easiest with Weck. I'm hoping I can use for stews and whole meals as well.

They used to use those Weck seals on Ball jars. I have old boxes of them that were never used – and they look fine. The ones by the edge of the box have aged enough to have cracks, but inside the box, they are pristine and likely could work. I'd still use newer seals, though, because food is too precious.

    Thanks for the video!

  2. I know you have so much going on right now but if you happen to see this would you consider doing an update to your Weck canning journey? With the shortages of Ball and Kerr jars right now I have started purchasing Weck jars and I’m sure others have too

  3. I come from Germany. Here is an official book from Weck with detailed instructions and recipes. In this book it says that the rings can be used until cracks or deformation appear.
By the way, before using the rings, they should be boiled in hot water for 2 minutes and put on the lid wet.

  4. I like to put vinegar in my water bath because we have hard water and this prevents that layer of lime. Hubby thinks the vinegar might be hard in the gasket. I was wondering if you use vinegar in the BWB ?

  5. We reuse the rubber rings several times. Just as Hanna P describes. I live in Danmark and Ball Mason is not the normal canning jars here. I have never had any problems with the way we use the wecks

  6. Thanks for your videos! Super informative and helpfull! I just want to say to anyone that I have never even heard of such thing that to replace the rubber ring after each use. Never heard of anyone doing that. Im not in America so I can say its absolutly unnessesary and obviously not the environmentally friendly thing to do. 🙂

  7. Ball Jars, are very expensive in Germany, like 6$ per jar and you cannot get the lids separately. Never heard of somebody in Germany, who uses the rings only once. Pressure canning is not really common in Germany, but people use weck jars for it.

  8. Thank you for this introduction! I know that Ball jars cannot be stacked in order to preserve the seal. Does anyone know if Weck jars can be stacked on top of one another after they have been processed? Thanks!

  9. this information is a life saver!!! thanks so much Jess!!!! I'm leaving this message in August of 2021 and the Ball jar seals are no where to be found, I have been looking since last summer. I don't trust any other brand seal becouse they have a poor seal rate. that said I do have a tone of vintage clamp canning jars that I don't know how to use. I'm assuming it's the same as these jars because they are so similar. now I need to hunt online for the rubber seals……thank you so much Jess for making this information available

  10. I really like Weck jars too and it's so practical that you can reuse everything. By the way, apart from the test you showed to make sure the jars are sealed, you can also have a look at the lip of the rubber gasket. If it is bent down a bit, you can see there is a vacuum and the jar is fine. This sometimes takes some time, until they are cooled down. But if the lid is not bent down by then, something might be wrong. 🙂
Only today, I was canning beetroot and cucumbers, and had almost forgotten about the time it takes for the vaccum to be created. I panicked a bit when the rubber lips of half the jars had remained straight, but after an hour, they were all pointing downwards. I was also surprised that twist-off jars take a while until the lid has a dent in the middle, indicating the vaccum.

  11. I am trying to watch all of your videos. It will take me a hot minute but I will certainly get to each one. BUT this one!!! oh my! I am now excited to get my supplies together for this canning experience for next spring. I can already but never have I seen this system Weck and it looks like a tool I need in my box of talents on the homestead. Thank you sweet woman for sharing with us and educating us and loving on us. I, for one, appreciate you and love your spirit and joy. Keep you and your awesome family in my prayers!!!
