VIDEO: Planting Onion Sets: What to Watch Out For

Onions are an interesting crop, as they’re a biennial in nature. That means they grow from seed to a dormant bulb in their first year, and from that bulb to flower (and back to seed) in their second year.

It’s important to take this into consideration when planting onions. You have three options when it comes to planting them:

1. Start onions from seeds
2. Start onions as transplants
3. Planting onion sets

In today’s video we’re going with option #3. It’s a great way to get into onion growing, because you shortcut a lot of the upfront growing time. Onion sets have been forced into dormancy while they’re still immature bulbs. This means they have a chance of going to flower instead of bulbing up.

To avoid this, make sure you select bulbs on the smaller side…they’re less likely to go to seed.

  1. I needed this video! I was in the garden today and my onions (I planted sets like these you showed today), well, the onions are about the same size as when I planted them in March! I'll cover them with mulch and leave them in the ground this winter (southern Iowa). Thank you again!

  2. Hi!! Thanks so much for your videos! I now have a worm farm that is running smoothly thanks to you. 🙂 I wanted to know what kind, IF any, fertilizer you use for your onions. I have mine in 5 gallon buckets, planted them about 2 weeks ago and am wondering if I need to fertilize with the 10 20 10 for this time period. Or if I should wait and just go with the blood meal later for the nitrogen content? Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

  3. At what point do you trim off the greens how did they do ? I keep seeing other gardeners say you can’t get an onion bulb from a set. I of course planted sets I hope I didn’t waste space in my garden with them.

  4. Didn't know about the two year maturity for sets. Started both sets and seeds. Have patience. The sets ate doing magnificently. The seeds nothing….yet. I did elephant garlic last fall and it wasn't til spring the greens appeared. Just harvested scapes and with be looking forward to big bulb harvest in a few weeks. Is the same done with onion harvest for biggest bulbs? Wait til the flower bulb scape produce then cut them off to let plant energy go back to making bulbs bigger unless wanting seed? Thanks again

  5. You don’t mention a common problem after planting onion setts. Birds thing the pales, dried tops are worms and pull the whole thing out. You may have to drop a net over the planting area until greenery has emerged.

  6. The greens on my onions are laying over completely, should prop them up or trim them off so they'll regrow….planted them early to mid May & its July 3rd
