VIDEO: Growing Hydroponic Tomatoes Indoors Using the Kratky Method

Success! This was my first hydroponic tomato experience. I rescued these seedlings from the Aerogarden, the pods there germinated more than one plant per pod, so I decided to transplant the thinned out plants from the Aerogarden into the same setup I use for my hydroponic lettuce and other leafy greens, using the Kratky method. It worked! BUT, I did make one very rookie mistake, although I was still rewarded with a nice crop of cherry tomatoes for my efforts. And next time I will grow my hydroponic tomatoes in a BIGGER container!!! I hope you try this too! Thank you for watching.

  1. Ive never done hydroponics. But i'd like to dip my roots….
    Great video!
How often does one change the solution? And do you replace the entire amount of water each time or just top it up?

  2. My wife and I drink Folgers coffee too. Our containers look different than yours. Is that the instant coffee containers?
BTW, those tomatoes got my mouth watering. I love a good sweet cherry tomato. Yum

  3. I was so shocked when I first saw that toothbrush lol I love this. I want to eventually build up to tomatoes but this gives me hope that I can do it. I want to try that method

  4. I do wish this Chinese made phone was not interfering in your channel but I can not stop it I was watching some thing early about Cucumbers being eaten so I would like more of that as we have Black ants here

  5. you don't have to worry about the roots because tomatoes grow more roots from the little hairs on the stems. plus tomatoes are WEEDS. so technically you're growing WEED. lol

  6. Tikki, Thank you and I can say, LOV YA FELLOW GARDNER, for telling me about the Kratky Method to Hydroponics, NEVER heard of it before, finally a simple way to grow clean veggies without DIRT, TUBES, pumps , PVC Pipes and electricity. WHO KNEW! NOW WE ALL DO ! ALso I found a way to make my own hydroponic plant food or as the Doctor who discovered this method back in the 1800's when he discovered you can make a tea out of cow poop and mix with the water and it works just as good. I hate being controlled by any one product. there were many ways to make a tank to do this.even cement. Again thank you for the info.

  7. I live in Vegas, well I attempted to grow Cherry Tomatoes outside on my patio, but the heat to them and died…Now, I just started with 2 Aerogarden's one for Herbs, and the second for Tomatoes…Enjoyed your video on transplanting…Where did you get the plastic seed baskets for the Mason jars…

  8. I loved this video Tikki as you showed a few options and, made it look so easy. I am about to set up my Aerogarden and grow tomatoes and lettuce together. So, this helped in my education. And, I love that Kratky method. I have a gallon and a few half gallon Mason Jars should I go that way. Thanks so much. I even bookmarked this video!:)

  9. Tomatoes sprout roots anywhere there’s fuzz on the plant. the plants in my patio garden grow new roots along the stems if they touch the soil.

  10. I really love your videos! I like how you let us see mistakes too and how you do experiments. I’m relatively new to gardening and this is day 1 of hydroponics and I’ve not only learned how to do stuff but also that failures and mistakes aren’t the end of the world ( I’m so hard on myself). I’m a teacher and I love how clearly you explain things. Thank you!

  11. Thank you for sharing your experience with us. Your video is well executed and a good follow up video would be greatly appreciated too if you have the time. Subject matter could be sharing all of your improvements that you learned from the first video. 4 to 5 months growing little tomatoes makes me think that there is a definite debilitating feature going on.

    Thanks again

  12. Hi Tikki, Great video very informative. I have a question. Have you ever had mold grow in your Kratky containers growing in the winter? We'd love to do this but my wife is extremely sensitive to mold and we don't want to do this if there is a possibility of mold growing in the containers. Thanks
