Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Save seeds by separating seeds from spent flower heads with blender. Strain & blow chaff away.
Cover plant with small hole mesh bag to reduce cross polination & bug infestation. Basil is self pollinating so shake plant to help pollination. Pass the word!

  2. Hello um if you take off a stem of basil and put it into water it will grow roots aannnddd if you cut off part of a stem leaving leaves at the top the leaves will start growing new stems into different directions

  3. Thank You "Self Sufficient Me!" This really gave me a good introduction to types of Basil and their benefits. The growing tips were very useful too! And I loved seeing your awesome, huge, healthy Ginger! I'm impressed, awesomely amazed, and abundantly grateful! : – ) Happy 52 years on the planet!

  4. I planted so many flowers to attract bees and nothing attracted them like my basil going to seed. Every day I'd find more and more bees. Was pleasantly surprised.

  5. I never thought of growing basil in thick bunches. I have some lemon basil seeds that fell from my previous plant and I was going to separate them, but will leave them instead. Thanks a lot.

  6. Thanks for the basil tips. But bud why the spinning space ball globe? We arent spinning nor curving. Neither motion or curve has never been detected or measured its a lie and its time to grow up and learn where you live. If you even care seems most dont today. So sad

  7. Looking young for 50! I'm going to have to start growing some of that purple basil myslef. Too bad I live in the cool climate of Washington state (near Vancouver Canada). I guess I'll just have to hold off until spring.
