I’ve always been fascinated by post-apocalyptic scenarios. Zombies, plagues, you name it. I wonder: how would I survive in that situation? Well, I’m going to put it to the test. Announcing the Apocalypse Grow Challenge, where I’ll attempt to survive off of urban gardening, foraging, and fishing from June 1 to June 30, 2019.
In today’s video I introduce the challenge, the rules, my strategy, and the different areas I’ll be growing in for the challenge. Practicing these kinds of primitive skills and survival skills will be a new thing for me, as I’ve never gone this extreme with my garden.

Sounds like you were prepping for covid-19. Only issue is, the pendemic happened in winter, so maybe a new winter apocalyptic series is beneficial

I know this is an old video but as long as you are foraging for tuna (prickly pear) you can also eat the cactus, as long as its new green growth. The older growth is not edible.
I'm new to the channel and am really enjoying it. i keep coming across him taking about this grow challenge but i cant find any videos of it. where can i go to see them?

just saw this one, your oils problem? walnut, flax, grapeseed; its possible to build something with a hydraulic jack and a couple of thick oak boards in a frame to press oil. you can broadcast flax seed in an abandoned lot in a true post apoc world. also very nutrient dense and easy to grow sweet potatoes should be part of your plan, though they do tend to take over where they are planted, good for raised bed.
Your plan sounds good. Bartering is fair I do it all the time with my neighbors. It has been a great source of diversity.

Are you allowed to barter your work and knowledge for food?
This challenge seems to work as long as things are going ok. Not on an apocalyptic situation.
For example, one of my friends' mom had her entire garden destroyed when people broke in to steal for food after riots broke out in Chile last year.
What would you do to protect your food supply in the event that social order goes out of order? I have used a shotgun to keep people off my yard before… It works beautifully!
I'd love to share my food in such cases but if people come in and ruin my food supply, then we're all screwed.
Another thing that I saw is that your set up will work as long as the infrastructure is still working. Your grow lights and hydroponic are very good but won't work if the power is out. I use solar water pumps for this reason.
What do you do to store water? If water goes out for weeks then your plants won't be too good at producing food. I'm still working on this item.
Another thing to consider is that when you're out foraging, fishing, or hunting, people might want to steal your kill. This is unlikely to happen now when things are ok. But when food runs out, people get wild. What would you do to protect yourself?
Someone once told me that during the Great Depression, it was difficult to find wildlife to hunt because so many people were doing it and so much poaching. This is why she had fish with her hydroponics.

Wonder how it’s going right now during this crazy time?
Again love this!!!! Another interesting question – could you create a post-apocalyptic urban garden with nothing but seeds you forage from the area around you? You could even do an unapocalyptic version of this (more of reducing your footprint or if you have little money). You could gather seeds or clippings to grow into a garden without spending any money on seedlings and pre-packaged seeds. You could use seeds leftover from meals (i.e. vegetables/potatoes) But, you could only use dirt/fertilizer/insecticides from organic items you find around your area/house. (no money can be spent on them). Do you think it's possible? And how big or sustainable could it possibly be? (I got this in my head watching all those silly garden hack videos where they plant literal bananas/tomatoes into plain dirt.)
If you add a column to the middle of that garden tower you could put worms into it.
I realize this comment is a little late but, I live Oceanside near Vista where we are able to forage wild artichokes and awesome greens growing wild near our property. I love the idea of foraging for food in San Diego!
Actually I got embezzled so instantly i had to live off my. Self grew or saved for the last. Months _ sucks
food stamps are not an option
no calif aid because of. Fraud previously done by others mostly by people in jail with fake ids and so any I'd needs to be verified for ca residents but calif is not using a functional method for id verification for assistance like unemployment. So its not just for apocalypse im in month 3 and praying i make it. Gas is what i didnt store enough of. Silver was very helpfull but ut will also. Be in my list of needed more of
