VIDEO: Never Waste Your Garlic Tops Again! Green Garlic Powder Recipe

In preparation for my Apocalypse Grow survival challenge, I HAVE to have some spices and flavorings…but only if I grow them myself. I had to clear a bed out, so I harvested some garlic early and turned it into a green garlic powder.

Clean, wash, and dice garlic into small, even chunks. Slice bulbs in halves or quarters for even dehydration. I dehydrated at 170°F for 9 hours, then blended finely. I would recommend a coffee grinder if you want it to be a pure powder texture.

This was my first time learning how to make garlic powder and I’m already feeling like a homesteading boss :P. It’s pretty easy, though I could use a dehydrator in the future. Let me know in the comments if you have a better method!

  1. I bet your house smelled amazing. You should try making your own cayenne pepper powder, it's the real deal. I make it every year and it lasts forever, but blows the store-bought out of the park!

  2. I have found one of the simple things in life even though it has a larger up front cost I like using a plug in dehydrator as it will allow you to get lower in temp and greater control at those lower temperatures.

  3. I grow aquaponically with no media other than water. Often if I dont sell all my products pr have bumper crop, I do the same thing; but I have a food dryer. I then produce blends of microgreen salts, dried soup stocks and use the dried roots as fish food powder.

  4. Amazing, thank you first for letting me know I passed over those "funny-looking" scallions too many times! Second, I dont have a dehydrator yet and I was trying to think of a way to dehydrate some things (Moringa, microgreens) without going downstairs and putting a rack in my car windshield! Food dehydrator is definitely in my list!

  5. FYI you can make an easy solar dehydrator with a cookie sheet with a cooling rack set in it, and a pyrex casserole pan turned upside down over it. Definitely not a lot of space, but it's great for doing a small batch of cherries or tomatoes. I find it usually takes about 2 days.

  6. In Indonesia, we use that just as it is , chopped them finely and garnish them on top of any food, mostly soup cause the aroma comes out nicely with hot water.
