Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. G'day Everyone! I tried to get this video uploaded yesterday but alas YouTube had other ideas and the upload failed for some reason… Anyway, here it is – thanks for your support 🙂

  2. I notice your trees are in raised rows heavily mulched. I wonder if I should be doing that? We just planted in a rather casual way and some fruit isn’t very good. Now I have some plan for improvement

  3. It looks like you could benefit from biochar and wood chips. aphids attack dehydrated plants.the chips will really help and cut down on your watering. Great job with the variety. Invest some time with the Back to Eden videos. Good luck

  4. I'm glad there wasn't a quiz at the end of this! So many different varieties. Moved to north Florida this year from a place that always gets snow in the winter. Looking forward to growing the subtropical fruits.

  5. Saw the video today. Loved it. Probably got already got your answer on custard apple in case you haven't, custard apple are hard and tight even when they are ready to be plucked. The protrusions or bumps on the fruit become wider and larger. The fruit becomes yellowish white in top with lighter green shade. They need to be plucked and kept in warm place or buried deep in rice sacks for it to ripe in 24 to 48 hours

  6. Hey Mark – Thanks for the great vid! Do you have a link to the 'next' video you reference at the end where you said you'll talk about how everything is connected, irrigation, etc?

  7. Enjoy watching your video, smooth talking, and thank you for taking your time explaining . To answer your question on how and when to pick the sugar apple ! It will get soft when touch gently, the color also will change to be less green and some has a nice fragrance , also the section will expand larger when mature enough . This is one of my favorite fruits.

  8. You may find it easier if the Latin name of the plant is inclued with the common name. The problem is that many plants have many common names that spread over different plants and species

  9. Hi I have 1 acre on the GC, it seems I have a similar dream on a smaller lot. I have many of the fruit trees you mentioned, can you make a fruit fly management video for your fruit trees.
