Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland, Australia, about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online, so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark šŸ™‚

  1. I re-uploaded this video because YT added 0.5 seconds and made it into a "long" video instead of a short. Anyway, I will be making a long form video with a lot more information on our Envirocycle soon. Cheers šŸ™‚

  2. Grew up in Alaska and we used gray water for the gardens, from the sinks and shower, and the black water from the toilet went into an old buried van that acted as a septic tank before draining into our leach field. Living off the land is about using what you have and not letting much go to waste. Love your videos and have been learning much from you! Thank you!

  3. Thank you so much. I have been asking about this for years. Where do you buy the extra filter tank? What size pump do you use to pump the water out of the 2nd tank? You donā€™t need under ground pipes in a leach field? How often do you have to change the filters in the second tank?

  4. Always thought it was kinda strange to pay the utilities company for water then let them take back the overflow for free. Make far more sense to use it on your property if you have it.

  5. Itā€™s not safe unless that filter can get all of the bacterial, viral, and fungal pathogens. As soon as you mix any ā€œwaterā€ with stool, it becomes massively contaminated thanks to its movement through our shedding gut biome.
As far as I am aware, a filter wonā€™t cut it. Waste treatment facilities use chemicals and/or UV light to eliminate pathogens.
I have heard of doing this with ā€œgrayā€ water – dirty but not contaminated (eg dishwasher) but never with ā€œblackā€ contaminated water. Plants can absorb certain pathogens and get into the fruit and then into us. This is how most E. coli vegetable and fruit contamination happens – contaminated water was used for irrigation.

  6. That kinda explains why weā€™ve never seen you drink from your garden hose! Lmao!serious question for you brother. The problem with my garden is everything usually gets rip at the same time. You can only give friends and neighbours so much. Do you have any canning videos? Or are you thinking of doing any? Iā€™ve seen the fermented two you have. Pickles and the cherry tomatoes with garlic and basil. Where do you buy that gear from? Iā€™m American living in Victoria. I grew up with a large garden when I was a kid, but that was over 45 years ago. Iā€™m using my wifeā€™s iPad. Mine is Paul Redinger love what you do brother. I glad you even show the failures, and are very truthful about what you do. Well done brother. God bless you.
