VIDEO: Why We Walk Our Cat in the Garden

In this video, I give you my 4 main reasons why we walk our cat in the garden. Cats are wonderful pets and animals but they can be a destructive force on the environment and that’s why we manage our pet cat “Geo” the way we do.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Good to see someone else walking their cat. When we had Max, he loved to go for walks and also didn't like to go back inside. Cats are trainable, but you must start very young ie before 12 weeks of age. Because at 12 weeks or thereabouts they think that we humans are totally fooled by them.
My parents taught all our animals – dogs, cats and cockatoos how they were expected to behave. Fifty years later, I am still following those ideals.

  2. Cat walkies are great! Keeping both cats and the environment safe is incredibly important, especially in places where wild cats don't exist as they can be especially damaging to the environment. In certain places, particularly island nations (and New Zealand), cats are responsible for completely decimating the local ecosystem.

  3. My cats worst action when outside is a little digging but when i tsk at him he stops. He just enjoys roaming and having a perspective of whats going on. Cats are a bit territorial so they would be intrigued more by the wildlife such as birds then actual objects in the garden. When theres weeds he chews but i got him a patch of cat grass to distract him and allow him to chew on something that isnt harmful to him.

  4. I started to walk my cat but he’s so eager to go out he would shout at all hours of the day and demand walks at 2 am.

  5. Geo looks like a lovely feline.. Being Veterinarians we found your video so educational for those who may not understand that cats are very creative creatures & full of love of course on their terms an thats just a cat.

  6. Not a cat person but I did have one that drifted by long enough I bought it food and nursed it back to health and he disappeared but I still think about him from time to time. Just a dog person cause cats tolerate us while dogs love us!

  7. Thanks so much Mark,( Good name that!) 🙂 Also, Geo and Family! I've been watching you for sometime and wanted to send thanks from Canada. I too walk the cat walk, but believe me it's the Kitty doing the strutin'! Keep up the excellent content. You always brighten mood and the garden! Take good care way down there!

  8. Depends on the cat's personality, but for mine, I don't have them on a leash. Rather I just go outside with them and follow them everywhere. My cats are absolutely useless at hunting so that helps. Also they never stray far from the house, which also makes this arrangement possible. For some reason they won't kill anything outdoors. Just things that get indoors, and even then they think some pests are "too gross" to mess with.

  9. Я тоже гуляю нашего кота на улице , но только с поводком. Большой город, большие проблемы))

  10. I love the fact that you protect wildlife from your cat. I'd love to have a cat that ate grasshoppers! The little green/brown monsters are the bane of my gardening experience. They chase me inside all summer long due to a childhood terrifying experience. Is there something you can spray on trees/shrubs to repel grasshoppers?
