My friend Martin built an aquaponics greenhouse for the non-profit he works with, Ecolife Conservation. He’s built some incredible aquaponics systems in the past, but I think this is my favorite one of his.
In fact, he harvested almost 500lb of cucumbers just a couple of weeks ago from it, and there are thousands of pounds more coming over the course of the summer.
Today, we’re going through the details of his system. He’s made some interesting improvements on traditional aquaponics setups which are high in nitrates but can often lack other key nutrients in high enough amounts. By aerating and filtering the solid fish waste, he’s been able to extract even more nutrition from the tilapia he keeps.
The water from the aerated fish waste is filtered out to nearly clear, but with 4x the nutrient profile of the water that’s typically found in an aquaponic reservoir…and more trace nutrients as well. Very clever!

That's so cool!
Oh dear, wish I have that technology to produce and consume. Someday I will have that technology and the produce I will give it away to all my neighbours and if it's more enough I will give it to those hungry in my community.
Thanks Kevin, this is so inspiring and I think I will start researching for such technology. Very amazing!
Wow, wow, wow! Love, love, love!
My cucumber plant have only male flowers. What to do
What spools do they use? I'm thinking of building similar trellis for my cucumbers
How does he add potassium into the system? Does it require a different feed?
Once you're settled in your new place, definitely do a follow-up and possibly an aquaponic system!! Also, discuss the pollination process on this scale 🙂
That's amazing! I love it.
Ironic that while watching this I got an ad telling me not to use aquaponics.
I'm always curious on how you solved lighting problem. My plants don't have enough light, but I don't want to use extra electricity to solve the problem since it won't be environmental friendly
How long is his growing season? Is it all year long? Or, rather.. How long can those plants keep producing before they are retired and won't produce any more?
How do you add potassium?, Does it affect the fish or the the enzymes?
It's no good spending a few hundred pounds sterling to grow upfront to grow lettuces costing a few pence.
This is IN.SANE. lol how awesome!!!!
Random question: where do you get the music for the end of the video?
I heard you say u have to add potassium to ur system, how much to a 1000 gallon system and where would u get it? Damioncampbell004@gmail.com, let me know
Brilliant stuff
Wow that's amazing! Do you know how much energy/electricity it takes to keep the pumps and everything running?
The nitrates magically disappear
Hi, did you do a video on Martin's filtration system? Is it a DIY system or commercially bought on? Would he be willing to share the details, please?
There are many factors in learning home aquaponics. One place I found which succeeds in merging these is the Keiths Ponics Site (check it out on google) definately the no.1 info i've heard of. look at this awesome resource.
More Hydro/aquaponic content!
would love to see how u have your solids filter set up to use as more fertilizer
Been there and nice setup
I am buying a hobby greenhouse tomorrow…..can I build this in a smaller size?
Hi is there schematics to this system, list of things needed to copy this set up….thanks @epic Gardening
My 150 gallon system is all set up can't wait to start growing
Hey there! Can we know how does he add Potassium in the system?
