Make your own orchid potting mix to save time and money! In this video, I show you how to make your own Orchid potting mix from just 4 ingredients and 5 minutes of your time. Orchids are specialized plants that cannot simply be potted into the regular soil you’d use for other plants. Their roots are normally exposed to air and they require a coarse, fast-draining mixture.
The video shows you the 4 components for the mixture, as well as the percentages you need to achieve optimal results. I also show you the dry fertilizer recipe I use, exclusively for orchids!
I agree on the dry fertilizer! Liquid fertilizer just shoots straight through!

For the orchid experts, can you get moth orchids in blue? I think that would be a really STRIKING flower!

Hi! Quick question. I have a small phalaenopsis orchid that is REAL SAD. I cannot get her to be happy with the medium I put her in. I have only used bark with nothing else and SOMEHOW the bark keeps molding. Not sure if I have a contaminated bark mixture but every plant that has received this bark has gotten a nice yellow and green mold that attacks the roots + bark. OR, could this be due to my watering? I truly only mist her during the week and then once a week she gets a 15 minute soak. Other than that, I do not flood the soil. Unsure what to do to combat this other than to now try a different medium to put her in. My question would be, is using sphagnum/peet moss an okay substitute for the finely ground bark? (Maybe a silly question but I'm a first time orchid mom and it's clear these gals are a whole different beast).
Cheers!
