One of my more successful succession gardening experiences has been to grow lettuce in the understory of my tomatoes (or peppers) in the summer, then harvest and cut down the tomato vines in September and plant another row of lettuce in their place. That way I have two staggered rows of lettuce for crazy fall yields!
