Don’t Mess With Your Garlic, Mulch It! For best results of this unique over wintering crop, it should be mulched. Mulching does many things for many different plants and crops, but even more so for Garlic.

Would wood chips / landscaping bark be a bit too heavy for them?
I planted mine/first time next to my strawberries and covered everything with leaves…happy to have seen about 2-3 inches of growth!!!

My garlic was planted in a fabric container in October and has green shoots. Is that normal? Also, I mulched with shredded coconut husk. Should I cover them at night since temps are in the low 20s? I’m in zone 7

I’m wondering if I put enough mulch on my garlic. I have around 4 or 5 inches of leaves I ran over with the lawn mower. It’s going to get down to 11 degrees F tonight and it’s only December.
The colder the climate, the deeper the mulch. It's single digits F and 2 feet of snow, and winter just started. Guess I should err on the heavy side 🙂

Interesting video. Thanks! I used plenty of fall leaves to mulch my garlic, but annoyed at my garden chipminks who have been digging in the garlic beds to bury their acorns, oh well. Btw, how is your indoor garlic doing, Jeff? I have completed the stratification nprocess and am going to plant them this weekend!

I planted lots of garlic in containers outdoor and didn't mulch them. It has been raining quite a bit and the soil has indeed eroded exposing the plant. I think I'll add a bit more soil and throw on some dead leaves.
Thanks for another helpful video, Jeff! I used to live in Seattle so I know how wet and gloomy that region can be. Question, can shredded paper be use as mulch? Got plenty of those.
