VIDEO: Make Seedling Shelves from Galvanized Mesh | Repurposing

In this video, I show how to make seedling shelves or trays low cost by repurposing some old galvanized mesh. Now I have somewhere to nurse and grow our seedlings and young plants before planting them out in the garden.

Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. I found another trick to keep small pots moist – use another pot full of soil beneath it. The pot under has pretty much no surface area to evaporate, and the two soils seem to wick moisture up into the upper pot a little bit.

  2. Hi. Really like to see your videos. And, even more now when I see you fixed a really good run for your quails ❤️
    Cold greetings from a new channel from Sweden. I will be writing about;
    * Homesteading
    * Prepping
    * Canning
    * Cooking
    * Dumpsterdiving
    and much much more.

    You are all welcome to subscribe and follow me on my journey ❤️

  3. I use old plastic water or pop and wine bottles ,fill them up with water and put them in my plants after l water them. The water stays in the bottles and when soil starts to dry then they water the plants. I have a 13 year old coconut palm l started from a seed that's getting Hugh in the living room. If l leave town a few weeks l have the bottles all around it. I use it on all my plants, even on the outside plants in summer. Tomatoes love it. I've got scallions mints and herbs inside all over the place. Its been snowing but my outside onions are under piles of leaves and doing good. The vertical growing is great in winter indoors Amazing how plants don't need to much sun to grow inside

  4. I had a question in my head for some time, didnt know anyone to ask about.
    I have plant around 8 cherry seeds at home, 2 of them made it and they are grown about 15-20 cm hight with their nice green leafes, still in bucket im the kitchen, my question is when would be the best time move them into the garden?? Im im the Uk just so know weather wise

  5. You showed some of what we in the U.S. call "zip ties" or "cable ties"…since Australians are so creative with abbreviations — what are they called there? Our current guesses are "zippies" or "zippas".

  6. Great ideas you have there Mark ! I also love the ideas of repurposing a heap of things that i have here on my block… Gardening is all about trial and error…. Im forever doing this and found it frustrating when I have some good ideas ( so I thought they were at the time) and get disheartened when its a epic Fail ! I just love your vids here and you totally inspire me to keep going ….. keep up the great work Mark ! Cheers from South Oz 🙂

  7. Loving the vids Mark.
    Have been watching for a while now and this one inspired me to add/repurpose some old storage baskets we were going to throw out. Keep up the great work. Would love to see what seeds you plant at what time of year as I too am in north Brisbane/Moreton bay area.
    Cheers.

  8. Wow being on Compo is very depressing but not when I'm watching your channel. What a great idea and I think this is something I can do without aggravating my injury. Thanks, Mate for your ideas and tips, it really is enjoyable to watch.

  9. Hi Mark, Just wandering how did the growing tomatoes in shade test go? You may have answered it already in comments below but I went through some and didn't see the answer. Love your videos, keep them coming. Thanks from cold and rainy Ireland 🙂

  10. I love this! I utilise similar galvanised metal frames around our garden to keep out the brush turkeys, as frames for peas etc. And yes, they last so much better than anything plastic 🙂
