VIDEO: How to Build an LED Grow Light Rack for vegetable seedlings and micro greens

In this video I’ll show how I built my seedling germination rack with LED show lights and other items that can be found at most hardware stores. I’ve also included a link to these or comparable items below.

  1. Going to buy the supplies you listed to make my own seedling growing area for my garage. Thank you so much for this video! I have been looking at heat mats and lights and got discouraged with how expensive they can get. Your list of supplies has got me excited to try again. Thank you!

  2. Great video thank you! Building one here and following your instructions. Wondering if you have the racks enclosed at all to keep the light in?

  3. Just finished. I have patiently waited to get this going. This is my first year. From reading comments and questions below it seems that the fans are on a 1 hour on and 4 hours off schedule and the lights are on for 20 hours and off for 4 hours. Do you feel this is still optimal sine you have been through one planting? I really appreciate the help Kyle. You explain very well and are easy to understand. Can’t wait to get these seeds started this weekend.

  4. Absolutely love your videos and can't wait to try my hand at indoor seed starting this season! How high above the plants to you typically start the lights and once germinated, how far up are you raising them?

  5. Hi there from Toronto, Canada. Firstly, I wanted to say thank you for this really, really great tutorial! I only have an LED grow rack in place because of how simple and approachable this video was. 🙂
In the chance that someone else reads this prior to building their own rack, who may be just a NON-HANDY as I am but embolden to try, here are two additional considerations based on issues I ran into:

    1) you really need hold the pipe straight and double check that the marks for your brackets line up together. My brackets ended up probably a 5mm different angle on the pipe and it still works, but does make the whole set up a bit twisted (maybe this is obvious for anyone whose ever do any sort of handy project before… but that isn’t me)

    2) buy your lights FIRST, check what your mounting hardware looks like THEN buy your pvc pipe. I purchased a 3/4 inch PVC pipe as recommended, but the screws that came with the mounting kit were 1 inch. Again, it all works out, but it was incredibly difficult to thread the rope through since the screws obstruct the entire space. Finally got it through using a needle and thread, but this part was far more difficult than anticipated!

  6. I am in Cincinnati and watched this and the follow-up video. HUGE thanks as this will be my first try at a system and wondered about placement. I was going to put in my basement and the temp is 60 degrees. Will that be a problem??

  7. So much great info here! Thanks so much for all Kyle!! My first propagating experience so everything is really helpful!! -Do you think if I have a 36"x14"D rack, 2 lights per shelf is enough? I measured out the space between what you did and it seems like that would be enough. Also bc I'm using 3ft lights, the lumens are only 1600, but they are 6000K. Will that work? or maybe I need 3 per shelf bc lumens are lower? eek. Thank you!!!

  8. Thanks so much for this and such clear amazing instructions! I just got the things to make this and then realized you are using 3 lights per shelf as I didn’t pay close enough attention my first view. Do you feel I could get away with two per shelf or does each level really need three? I am trying to make 3 shelves for growing.

  9. I am using the same lights you are but we are using 4 lights per shelf. now that the seedlings are getting taller I am noticing damage on my tomato seedlings from what may be burns. Have you noticed this with 3 lights per shelf?

  10. Great video! But I did the exact same setup and i have no luck with my seedlings, especially tomatoes. How far should the lights be from the seedlings?
