VIDEO: Hydroponic Peppers from Seed to Harvest: Kratky vs. DWC Comparison

Follow along from seed to harvest. It took 130 days to finally have ripe bell peppers indoors using two hydroponic methods. One tote was set up using the Kratky method, the other using the DWC or Deep Water Culture method. A fun side by side experiment, I hope you enjoy!
If you want to see how I set up the DWC tote, here is the video link:

  1. I use the Tetra Whisper pumps from pet stores. 20 gal is a good size for 5 gallon bucket. 6" air stone can be near the top as long as the nutrient is kept high enough. You need a check valve if the pump is below the water level of the bucket to avoid siphoning. Air pumps done draw much power and you can run them during daylight hours to conserve electricity.

  2. The taste and aroma was gone due to heavy rot rot infection on both systems visible in form of brown rot balls nearly at the end of the video.
    It’s Pythium or Fusarium.
Pathogen infection of the roots always impacts aroma, taste and smell of the fruit even if the plant limbs somehow up to the end of its life cycle (harvest).

  3. Is it possible you need to change the feed and growth parameters to produce plants that taste proper? Apparently Spinach is kinda of sensitive and will grow bitter under the wrong conditions…

  4. Of the dozens of them I have watched, this is the best video on hydroponics I have seen so far. Very well explained, precise information, and down to the point. Well done Mam!

  5. interesting; getting same results.

Running indoor aeroponics; peppers and tomatoes.

They look great and grow fast, but the taste is bland, bitter and doesn't compare to the same seeds used outdoors.

Lettuce and other leafy veggies work great indoors.

  6. A plants fruit grown from its seed is not going to taste the same.
If you want the same fruit you need cuttings off of the mother plant.
As for them tasting green. You have picked them to early because the other reason they taste like that is lack of water and well…..

  7. Is the light change due to the stage of the plant or just a decision midway through? Also is there something like root stimulator already in the solution. All very interesting. Thank you

  8. Hybrid Peppers like that are generally not true to type because of how they are grown. Almost all of them are clones taken from cell culture. The soil or nutrient blends they used to grow them will also impact flavor a great deal. Only way of getting something identical is to do a cell culture of any of the stem material and pray it takes.

  9. Great test! I was wondering DWC vs Kratky… this save me a lot a time.
BTW the seeds from a fruit will never be the same as the mother plant (or very very VERY small chance, it's genetic!). Like our children are not the same as us parents.

  10. Great video. Very informative and well explained. I heard a trick you might want to try (maybe another comparison video) if you replace the hydroponic solution with plain water for the last week before harvesting it will help flush excess nutrient out of the plant and achieve a more natural flavour. It would be interesting to compare.
