  1. Glad to see you fortifying your chicken coops I see so many people not do this and then wonder why they have problems. We are extending our chicken houses/ runs because we are getting 50 more chickens, 15 of which will be silkies and the rest will be a mix of standards, and 15 magpie ducks. We already have 10 full grown chickens 9 hens and 1 rooster. Busy spring time work on the farm. Pasture fences need fixed plus lambs, baby bunnies, chicks, and ducklings.

  2. Great Job! I do the same thing. Usually use hardware cloth. But like you I use what I got first. Then use what I can get for cheap. Then buy what I need. Funny I got the same drill. Lol!

  3. One added protection is and
this is going to sound a bit gross but,
My dad and even those as far back as he could remember used human urine to deter pests like weasels, fox , raccoons etc.
You either walk the perimeter and urinate on ground, shrubs surrounding the pen poultry is in or collect several days worth in a bucket and pour around enclosure.
You have to be diligent and reapply after rain, heavy dew etc.
The smell of human urine makes them think humans are close so they stay away.

  4. I love watching your videos! Cute goats and so much great advice about protecting your hens. I pass it on to my daughter with her 11 hens. I think with all of us blessed with eggs, I might help them with materials and additives to their diet. Could be fun to share it all!!

  5. Love you and your chipperness! But mice only need 1/4" and rats only 1/2", so how is your wire going to keep them out? I am going to build my first coop and this is a serious question, not a criticism!

  6. Thank you for your videos! I learn something new with every one of them and love your sense of humor. We all need that now more than ever. Stay safe and keep 'em coming.

  7. Doesn't your LGD patrol your chicken yard area? Ours never lets her chickie-chicks get out of her sight…..except when she gets out, and goes to visit the neighbors……..Yeah welll.

  8. Patara, when I had a predator trying to gnaw its way into an animal enclosure I had, I went out with a big bottle of Texas Pete's Hot Sauce and a paint brush. No more chewing.

  9. Managed to miss this vid while building our coop. But I feel even better now. We used 1/2" hardware cloth for the run with a full 18" apron around the bottom. Covered roof too. So far so good. Hoping a bear doesn't find us, but I think we're covered for everything else.
