Corn, Once The Garden Darling. One of the most popular crops of past backyard gardens, corn has fallen out of favor recently. Large, cheap to buy at the grocery store, and a bit tricky during pollination time as you need several plants to ensure healthy ears. Despite all that, a HIGHLY rewarding crop to grow in this day, during these times.
A poor transplanter, corn is usually direct seeded, even here in Canada. However, with a finite warm growing period, if you want corn early, you gotta seed corn early. As a warm-weather plant, it will NOT germinate in cold or even cool soils. Bit of a pickle eh? Well, let’s get these guys seeded early like a typical seed in typical seeding trays…..and then see where we get to!

Funny thing is last year,when I didn't know any better, I took an ear from fridge that had started to wither. I broke it in half by hand then took a knife and cut halves into quarters. I took a Tupperware dish bin and filled it with soil. I planted the 4 quarters in the corners of bin and kept watering daily. Every single kernel germinated. Never having done this before I pulled all the sprouts out of the cob. Had WAY too many babies and ALL of them transplanted fine. I'll probably never be able to do this again.

is it an annual plant?
1. Start with fresh corn seeds for the best results.
2. Directly sow seeds approximately 1.5 to 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart.
3. Cover with soil, space your rows of seeds 30 to 36
inches apart.
4. Water your block of corn well after planting.
5. Corn stalks are sturdy and should not need staking.
I have an ear of corn that my late father had for God only knows how long. Its purple. Would these seeds still be able to germinate? Just curious if I should try. Thanks!
