Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Papaya is so special in Mexico we love it so so much like cactus and guava which are native to here. Maybe because our ancestors ate it a lot before. So thats why we enjoy it a lot .

You can dry the seeds and put them in a pepper mill. They aren’t gross tasting…..but you probably weren’t expecting the flavor….if you know they taste like pepper corns and are really gooodnfor you you might now think they are “bad” tasting.
(You’d probably say the same if you are a whole peppercorn too)

  3. I grow papaya in TX, but the fruit so late in the season and caught in the frost at year end.
you can still eat raw papaya as in papaya salad.

  4. papaya seeds are really good for you. after drying you can put them in a pepper grinder and use them as a black pepper substitute … and they are an anti inflammatory unlike the black pepper. oh and of course you can plant them … :))

  5. Love your videos Mark. I've been experimenting with germinating papaya seeds and have found that you need to get the seeds from a whole fully ripe fruit (not a shop one that has been cut in half) and plant them straight away. No washing or drying of the seeds, just plant them straight from the fruit. This must be done during the warmer months and the soil must be kept damp. Don't let it dry out. The seeds will take up to 40 days to germinate so be patient. This will give you nearly 100% germination.

  6. Great video thank you for making and sharing, when fermenting for a week or two in a glass, are they supposed to be in water or were they supposed to be rinsed earlier then place in glass for a week or two to ferment?

  7. how do you know the paw paw/papaya that you are taking seeds from is a bisexual tree? I've just got a store bought one and are collecting the seeds to see what happens. also .. you didn't mention how long to soak the seeds .. I'm just going to try overnight .. can you store the cleaned and dried seeds for a while? thanks
