Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂

  1. Hey everyone! I understand there are lots of frugal ways to make these products and I have also made sprouting or fermenting vessels with recycled bottles etc but that wasn't the point of the video. I mostly save our own seeds also, but that doesn't stop me from buying them occasionally and supporting the "grow your own" or DIY small business community. Yes, saving money is important but spending it in the right areas is also an important philosophy for me. Thank you for your ongoing support and helping me to pass 90k subscribers this month! https://www.selfsufficientme.com/

  2. You can also buy cheap dried beans, lentils and flax seeds. They sprout very easily and if you rotate them every three days you have a constant supply of fresh greens.
We used to do this as kids using jars and a nylon mesh. Funny that these days they call it "super food".

  3. I found Clover sprouts have actually replaced my desire to have meat in a sandwich. They taste way better and the texture change has made a big difference for me too.

  4. Did you try eating the sorghum sprouts yourself? Were they any good? Seems like a plant that's easy to grow in the area so could provide a never ending source of free sprouts!

  5. We use a wide mouth jar – vacola jars are great – with a piece of flyscreen and a large rubber band. Alfalfa seed will go through flyscreen when dry, but not after soaking for 24 hours! A friend gave us a draining container made from a small ice cream container…works great. Will do a video about it when I can get some more alfalfa seed…haven't been able to buy them here for a few months.

  6. I love Alfalfa sprouts! I always wondered how to grow them! I'm gonna buy a kit and a bunch of seed and I'll be growing these year round! Thanks Mike for posting this! Awesome stuff!

  7. I'd totally recomend fermenting. It stores for a really long time so the time investment is well worth it. Not to mention good sourcraut at the market is outragously priced.

  8. Thank you I tried to do sprout and nothing so I ordered the screen do do them again. As soon as it come then I will try it. And I planted ginger. So we will see. Both videos are great.

  9. Hey Mark, thank you for this video, I learned a lot again! I have a question: did you taste the sorghum sprouts? I know in Africa they eat sorghum not only as flower, or the young leaves as veggies, but they also eat sorghum sprouts. And those sprouts are said to be very healthy too…

Since you sprouted them, I was just curious about the taste 😉

  10. Saw a video where you flood the jar when you wash it to float out the husks…..saw a bit in the middle where your jar has heaps of husks around the top.

Good timing got my sprouts and micro green seeds today!

    Love ya work.
