VIDEO: 9 Easiest Edibles to Grow From Seed!

If you’re new to gardening, it’s intimidating to grow from seed. There are a lot of things that can go wrong, so here are 9 of my favorite foolproof crops to try growing from seed. I selected these for their popularity, germination time, and relative ease of growing to harvest without any major issues:

1. Beans – Dragon’s Tongue, Contender
2. Cucumbers – Marketmore 76, Iznik F1
3. Beets – Chioggia, Golden, Badger Flame
4. Brassicas – Dazzling Blue Kale, Beni Houshi Mizuna
5. Radish – Black Spanish, Daikon, French Breakfast
6. Peas – Desiree Dwarf Blauwshokker
7. Summer Squash – Crookneck, Pattypan, Zucchinis
8. Lettuce – Lunix, Salanova, Little Gem
9. Sunflowers – Autumn Beauty, Golden Bear, Moulin Rouge

  1. My cucumbers got absolutely murdered by some caterpillars/worms. I pulled them out and rotated out from some new soil so hopefully there wont be any remaining eggs or anything. I bought some neem oil so I hope it helps.

  2. Hands down my favorite radish is the watermelon radish – not only tasty but very pretty too! Also, I have found that if you don't water as much, or it's a dry year, the radishes can get quite hot in flavor.

  3. Thank you for the encouragement. I'm starting my first 4' x 4' bed with added containers this year after too many years not gardening, and I'm grateful for your channel and you!

  4. Just picked up a bunch of seeds from menards, burpees of course-they can be quite a bit when you end up buying like 20 at once. ^.^;;;

    Got a good number of different cucumbers including one I'm excited for, a lemon cucumber, found something cool, a purple radish I'm excited about, and various herbs/lettuce greens.

    now I just need to make my raised beds. I have a feeling I won't be planing a lot outside this year, but I'll try planting some of the purple radishes and lemon cucumbers in a pot because I don't think I can wait on those and save some seeds for next year. maybe even let them go to seed to see if I can regrow the same plant. ^.^

  7. Can you take the shell off the sunflower seed and germinate it from that? A lot of hard shelled seeds need the shell removed to get 'instant' germination results. For example I've broke the shells of plums and lemons to get them to germinate. I am trying germinating olives after cracking them… well see. Will sunflower seeds work the same?
