If you are new to gardening then why not try growing some Cos lettuce using the method shown in the video, you wont be disappointed. Quick to mature you can generally get two or three crops in a season. Remember, it’s cheaper to grow your own lettuce than buy it from the shops.

I've never really understood the concept behind "thinning". Yes if you're going to be digging some out and re-planting them then you are not going to be losing any. But thinning by throwing them away seems a waste. But if you're going to be transplanting them, why not do all of them at once? That way the growing seedlings are not competing with weeds that are spouting at the same time (and often the weeds grow faster). Hence the reason I always start my seedlings off in trays, in the greenhouse, and then transplant outside when they're ready. They have a head start on any potential weeds, they already have space to grow because they're planted at a decent spacing, and you don't waste time messing about.
No, "thinning" doesn't sound like a good idea to me. But to each his own, as they say.
Hi Adam, Little Gem has always been a lettuce of outstanding quality, very sweet and quick to mature. I think I might have been inclined to have sown a little more thinly! Certainly no problems with germination. I always had trouble with slugs but you seem to get away with. I believe you grow organically so would be limited to choice of pest control. The old gardeners would use soot around the individual plants with partial success!
