In this video I’ll review three different weed barrier options after installing them with my wood chip mulch pathway over two months ago.

  1. 5 inches isn't enough must be minimum 8 inches to block all sunlight, 12" is recommended. Best done in fall and left overwinter. Also an untreated mixed mulch works best but is really hard to come by unless self made.

  2. Dude, go after that nutsedge near the sidewalk edge with some carefully applied ag vinegar at 30%…and pull, pull, pull every time it rears its ugly head & dose down that vinegar again into the hole. This vid gave me PTSD from a 2 year battle with this monster.

  3. Nutsedge…never heard of it & lived in Ca my whole until 10 yrs ago. Where have I been! I use straight vinegar w/a teaspoon dish soap & 1/4 -1/2 c salt per gallon of vinegar in a sprayer when temps are going to be a dry & hot day. Saturate down to the root. not that it would work for these evil weeds but it does get rid of them for a few months. Nut sedge reminds me of bamboo. Can’t hardly get rid of it.

  4. One thing is that those weeds that did get through the cardboard and weedblock expended a lot of their stored energy to do that, so if you weed them as soon as you see green, they will die very quickly. If you allow them a ' green ' stage, then they will quickly start storing energy in the roots again. Even just the woodchips alone… if you weed one or two times after you put down the woodchips, then you are golden.

  5. Great video!
    My experience ….

If you watch the video closely, you will notice the weed block will only work for a short time…
    Let me explain

#1. With weed block, when you pull the weeds, it will not remove all of the weeds, as it has now woven into the weed barrier, and the main root will remain after being pulled to allow the weed to return. After you pull a part of the broken weeds root out, you now have left a tiny access hole for more new weed growth.

#2. Cardboard or thick newspaper will do the same as number #1.

    #3. No block at all…
If you watch the video you will see that the weeds easley pull up with most all of the root when no weed barrier was used (no breakage)… You just have to be a good gardener and pull as soon as you see any weeds popping up,
Keeping on top of weeds is the best secret to true weed block that you can use.

    My Tips…
#1. Use no weed barrier and pull weeds as soon as possible…

#2. Top of the Wood Chip :
Spray white vinegar, mixed with a hint of lavender on your pathways as soon as you see any signs of weeds… This is a natural weed killer.

#3. Know that using most all weed barriers will hurt your soil and make it become stagnant and smelly underneath and it will become a insect/bug nesting ground over time as it breaks down.

#4. This Works Best for Me :
I spread/shake an easy amount of Preen Weed Preventer below my wood chip pathways…
I get almost zero weeds, and my ground soil is in great condition.

  6. I guess this turned out to be a futile experiment. It seems the results for weed mat would be the same whether there was wood chips on it or not. But thanks for the effort anyways.

  7. Wow, We have the Exact same weed problem. That nut grass is relentless. B4 I knew what it was I use to Pull it out from the top, Ughh not realizing it would Quadruple
