  1. Thanks for the video. I have just bought some celery plug plants with no label! I didn't realise that there were different ways to grow different varieties – how best to them plant out? As a trenching variety do you think? I will bring them on some more in the greenhouse first….Thanks in advance

  2. Hello Sir. I absolutely Love this video, because I know nothing about growing celery. So I have a question. I took the tops off a celery root. It's growing roots.. can I put it in a pot and how deep should it be? Will it grow another big celery root?

  3. Good Lord do they take forever to sprout. They took so long i almost replanted something else in their pots. It was the same thing with onions though. And poppies.

  4. This is my first try at celery this year and I found that 2 of my plant have the Anthracnose fungus. I am removing them from the bed but I would like to know if you have an organic home remedy to prevent this spreading to my other plants.

  5. Thanks for this. I’m growing celery for the first time between a few short rows of corn. They get great shade at mid day, but I know there’s a lot of competition for moisture.

  6. Great comprehensive video…thanks…am definitely growing celery for the 2nd year….this heat wave is a challenge. What say you about pruning back the smaller celery stalks to encourage fewer big ones?

  7. First year growing celery and the Mrs. chose a pink variety. I had no idea how to grow it. Planted about 6" apart in a raised bed and just let it grow as it will. Poor watering habits and no training or trenching. We ended up with shrubs about 4" diameter at the base and around 100 stalks none bigger around than a pencil and mostly fibrous ribs with little flavor.
Now she wants to know what we did wrong. so she can grow it better next year. I knew Ben would have a video. Now I know they need to be trained or trenched much like leeks. And they require a stead supply of water. This is one that if she wants to grow we need to put in that drip irrigation system on a timer.

  8. My project for 2023 is to grow my own celery. I never thought that I would see the day that I had to plant celery. It was always a sensible choice at the market to buy. Now prices have skyrocketed and the quality of produce has waned. Celery just does not last in the crisper at all anymore.
I am sensing these days that people are going to have to dive into gardening in order to survive. Not live but to survive. I am by no means a doomsday purveyor but the writing on the wall is clear to me.
Don't get me wrong, at times there are some "deals" available. My Dad has offered to split the 5 kilo bags of turnips, beets and 10 kilo bags of potatoes and carrots with us. Assessing the situation it seems like a savings but still it is quite costly. There may still be a large amount of waste with that cost savings.

  9. I'm growing Utah Tall celery next year. Glad I searched and found your video. Now to find out if this type of celery is self blanching ot needs to be trenches. Thank you so much for showing us how to grow our own food.

  10. Another great video, Ben.
While we are half a world apart seasonally – it's 32 here in Johannesburg today – a quick seasonal mental adjustment and we're good to go planting wise.
Celery will definitely be on the 'menu' this year.

  11. Totally confused because when I read the directions on packet and read or see a video there are way too many variables.
Cover—don’t cover; light—diffused light; warmer during day—cooler at night. Seriously I’ve seen them all.
Which is correct? I just planted today and I lightly covered and have done on with heat mat.
Last year I winter sowed in jug and they germinated fine, but my growing season is 135 days and thought it would be better to start early and see if stalks grow thicker.

  12. I don't know if celery would do too well in my area: Zone 8a. Here we have hot hot hot! summers that at times reach 100°F (38°C).

Would it be best to plant them under tomatoes to give them shade and a cooler temperature?
