I'm in MA with a small backyard garden and this was the year for tomatoes, basil, rosemary, chard, celery and lettuces.

Up her Nebraska we call them garden spiders. I do have southern roots and I completely forgot the name orb weavers or writing siders.
beautiful tomatoes! your kiddo is right, it is a banana spider or a common garden spider. its venom is completely harmless to humans and i would be surprised to see one even bite in the first place, as they are very docile. they're just there to spin you beautiful unique webs and help control the pest population!
