VIDEO: Regrowing Supermarket Peppers: Which Tastes Better? – Hydroponics vs. Soil


I’m regrowing a supermarket pepper out in the garden, the seeds are from the same mother that I previously grew hydroponically. The results were amazingly different. Of course there were many variables besides the growing method that could account for the taste difference, and I expect the comment section to reflect that. Still, at its simplest level, the pepper plants I grew outside were much sweeter, and I was able to grow many more plants outdoors than I could indoors. The light was free too!   1. I don't think cross-pollination affects the edible fruit… just the seeds inside. At least that's what I've learned in my own experience. I've never had luck growing seeds from unknown (hybrid or heirloom) peppers… they always produce "funky" unflavorful veggies.

  2. Use only seeds from heirloom varieties, never hybrid or from grocery produce. Growing indoors has two major issues; lack of adequate light and insect pollination. I have been able to overwinter small hot Thai pepper plants indoors under LED shop lights which didn't produce over winter and did lose some leaves but in the spring began to produce very quickly once placed outdoors in containers. I typically grow sweet non bell peppers like Gypsy or sweet banana which produce quicker and higher yields in my Chicagoland climate. Composted tree leaves with kitchen vegetable scraps and a little dried blood is excellent outdoor fertilizer.

  4. Growing inside will never be as good as outside just to many factor to consider like you said we can surely improve our growing method or to focus on things that does well inside ! Keep on growing

  5. Can you try hydro and soil in the same tent? That would roll out the temperature, lighting and humidity 🙂 then you would know if it is your solution or something else

  6. Hi! Is it cold where you live? I see that your peppers are ok being under direct sunlight. I live in Manila and peppers here get burned if it's under direct sunlight. It's hard for us to grow peppers here in the city. Probably because it likes cold temperatures which makes sense because the peppers we get in the market come from Baguio which is another city but it's up in the mountains. Hmmm. I think I get it now. Haha! I love your videos, by the way! You don't waste people's time! Thank you!

  7. If i had to ques why the taste wasn't sweet was due to the light intensity, indoor hydroponic took longer but not fully ripped. To make this fair you'll have to do hydroponic outside on the sun for the indoor light you are using is most likely the reason in my opinion. I grew early girl tomatoes on my back yard during a summer ( one hydro, one soil) they both tasted the same (i did side by side taste test) the hydro was a clone of the soil although the soil was a month older my hydroponic caught up to it and i ate tomatoes from my hydroponic first.

  8. Thanks for documenting your grows. I wonder if growing without sun affected the taste of your hydroponic experiment. I've viewed other videos with hydroponic peppers with no reports of lack of taste.
