And we are live with Vlog # 7. Welcome everybody. Today I am going to take you with me on a new adventure as I am going to make my first attempt to collect some Korean Natural Farming IMO 1 and, if all that goes well, I’ll obviously jump right into preparing the Korean Natural Farming IMO 2. Now, for those of you who are new here to the channel, let me give you a warm welcome to the Toxandrian tribe first and allow me to explain a little of what you are looking at. As a first time gardener, I am only on one mission at this moment and that is how to make the barren sandy soil I have to deal with in my gardens more fertile so they become more suited to grow my fruits and veggies on. Although my first summer of gardening wasn’t a complete disaster, it did make me very aware of the fact that I have to find a way to turn this barren sand into fertile living soil. Yes, I already do use homemade compost from my kitchen scraps, but it just doesn’t seem enough. So in my search to upgrade the fertility rate of my sandy soil and with that hopefully create a more lushes garden with higher yields and less pest damage, I bumped into two different approaches on doing just that. The first approach I looked into was Biodynamic gardening, created somewhere in the 1920’s by Mr. Rudolf Steiner and the second approach that caught my eye was the Korean Natural Farming method, developed in the 1960’s by Master Cho. Both of these soil enhancing methods appealed to me so much, but both because of very different reasons, as I explained all that already in Vlog #4, of which I will put a link to right at the end of this video in case you missed it. So, me being the indecisive creature that I am, and me also being the experimental natured creature that I am, decided to redo my gardens and chicken coops from scratch and set them all up like one big experiment. You could say a comparative exercise between both of the soil enhancing methods of Korean Natural Farming on one hand and Biodynamics on the other hand, while bringing a third component into the mixture, which will consist of only compost and some compost teas, the method that I used this past summer. This way, I should be able to spot the differences in soil structure and fertility and of course in yield, which is why I am a gardener in the first place. I want to eat good, healthy and wholesome food and my mission is to get my gardens in such a shape that I will succeed in that.
So, to get back into today’s mission, namely collecting one of the 9 core solutions presented by Korean Natural Farming, I am going to try and collect my first IMO 1. Now, for those of you who are new at Korean Natural Farming, these letters stand for Indigenous Micro Organisms and as you can see, according to the Korean Natural Farming manual, these micro organisms that have been living in the local area for a long time are best because they are very powerful and effective. Now, according to the manual, IMO’s are primarily used to create fertile and healthy soil conditions that are ideal for farming and prevent plant diseases. Well, if that’s not the exact description of what I am chasing with all my endavours, then I don’t know what is. So, here we go. I have found this little spot next to the trunk of what used to be one of our elderberry trees. Now, before you get all upset of us cutting down a tree here, first, it was a volunteer, so it wasn’t growing in what one would mark as the most convenient place, and second, we still have another elderberry tree, also a volunteer if I might add, and yes, the same fate awaits that tree also, but not before I will get enough cuttings from it that we eventually will plant in each and every newly build chicken coop next spring, as we realized the past summer that trees do act as a natural air conditioning during the hottest days, but you can watch all that in our video “Natural Airco inside the Chicken Coop?”, I’ll make sure to put a link to this video as well at the end of this one. Now, you probably are wondering what a clumsy person like myself is doing here with some wooden planks, some screws and a screwdriver. Let me explain this little do-it-yourself
