  1. There is an interesting myth at the background of this incredible fruit tree.
In the ninth book of Homer's Odyssey, Odysseus and his crew encounter the Lotophagian island somewhere the Mediterranean sea. The Lotophagi feed on a plant that causes them to forget their homes, and makes them sleepy and dopey. They have no interest in the world around them, they just lay about and feast on this plant. That plant was the persimmon tree.

When some of the crew of Odysseus consume this plant, they don’t want to leave the island, and Odysseus is forced to lug them back to the ship and chain them until the ship sails away. They are weeping bitterly at having to leave.

Far away from the myth, if you pick this fruit, hung it on a dry place and consume it as a dry fruit, it will be on of the most delicious things you''ll able to taste.

  2. Does anyone know if this tree will attract yellow jackets and birds when the fruit is fully ripe? I am new to the world of gardening but any tips to prevent insects and birds would be helpful. I may want one of these eventually!

  3. There are also astringent asian persimmon varieties as well. My grandparents have a couple of those trees back in China. Now I live in USA and I think the reason we only see non astringent asian persimmons in Asian grocery stores is that, the astringent persimmons when ripen are impossible to transport and would easily break since they are so soft and delicate. But my grandparents sometimes would still sometimes pick astringent persimmons before they are fully ripe, just after they start to turn orange, so that they could get them before the birds do. The unripened persimmons would continue to ripen up after they are picked, especially when you put them together with a ripen fruit. And as they ripen up the tannins in the fruit that create the astringency would gradually break down then you can enjoy them.

  4. How come this is my 4th year of my peach tree and although I counted 50 peaches growing somehow there's non left again ! Even though we hung these long mirror type things to confuse birds.

  5. We have a wild 85 year old persimmon tree in our backyard. It produces a good yield every Fall of golf ball size fruit, and I use the crushed pulp to make pudding, baked with flour, spices, eggs and milk – delissh! My husband notes that the tree wood was once valued for its straight grain and toughness and formed into golf club heads. The deer love feasting on the ones I leave.

  6. I grew one persimmon tree for 3 years and it finally gave me these beautiful big fuyu persimmons. So excited to pick and taste them. Can you please share what kind of organic fertilizer you use to promote more fruits. I’m in zone 9b
