Farmer’s markets are a great place to shop for local crafts and foods, but they are also a great place to be an entrepreneur and sell your various products. Whether it’s vegetables, flowers, fruit, wine, jewelry, honey, sewing projects, meats, cheese, bread, eggs, or even a hot meal and refreshing drink, there is a customer and vendor for every niche. As a vendor though, you must find the right farmers market to sell at, as they are not all created equally. This interview gives the point of view of the manager overseeing our very successful Kelowna farmers market, so you can understand exactly what her expectations of you, as a vendor would be. Frances stresses the importance of creating a fun welcoming atmosphere, that lets customers have a fun experience instead of a routine shopping trip. One of the reasons people go to the Kelowna farmers market is because it is filled with so many high quality vendors, which is due to the strict enforcement of the “Make It, Bake It, Grow It” policy, that basically excludes resellers, as well as their policies that support local farmers, and the jury process where they check to make sure you really are creating the products you claim. High standards create the high quality experience that is the Kelowna farmers market.
