Today’s video is a complete guide to how I start seeds off in module or cell trays to ensure the best germination possible for the least effort possible. Sowing seeds is such a wonderful thing to do but it is often overcomplicated, therefore this is the simple method I use to start all my vegetable and herb seeds.
3 Extra tips on to help with sowing seeds in modules:
1- There is no need to rush and try and sow everything right away. I prefer to ease into the new growing season and am patient as I know there is still lots of cold weather ahead.
2- Don’t worry if you sow too many seeds in a cell by accident, you can just thin once the seedlings grow
3 – Build a dedicated leaf mould bin (or series of bins) for seed sowing so you can bulk up homemade or multi-purpose compost and save costs.

Huw – Can the module tray be kept in a garage until the plants germinate or is light essential for germination?
Great video—I learned a lot about module sowing. This will come in handy, so thank you!
I also learned (based on the up/down votes) that there is approximately one sociopath for every 100 normal people.
Thank you, Huw, I am grateful! I need to keep it simple because I am handicapped and wear out quickly, so I can't afford to waste time on pointless things.
I bought potting soil and my seeds started a month ago, then they stopped growing and turned purple-ish. I gave them an organic fertilizer and the are more green, but not growing larger. Is it just the soil?
Hi Huw – I really appreciate your no nonsense approach. I notice that your tiered shelf is undercover. Do you feel it would be ok to start seeds on a shelf with a cover outside?
This is excellent – Just managed to get my order in for 4 lots of 4 different types of containers from containerwise (they are back in stock now). I was trying to use the toilet roll method for sweetcorn but my success rate was very low (about 1/3 germinated) plus i got some red mold spots which a common with these, i see you're trying the toilet rool, any luck with them ?
I can never find those module trays and I have been looking everywhere for them I'm having to use the green module trays from my local homebase
Thanks for great advice!
Multisow me daddy UwU
Thank you for all the fantastic simple seed sowing tips.
Really Cool Sowing System, Huw. I used toilet paper rolls in the past, but found the paper tends to develope mold too quickly. What is your opinion on Soil blocks? I bought the gadget recently because we cannot get the heavy duty plastic trays so easily here in germany. In the troughput you have, this might save you money and plastic. Do you see major downsides for this method?
Thank you so much ❣️
Well done video! So many practical ideas. Thank you.
Are you wearing a pukko
Where the tray is available in online shop?
How, What marker do you use on yogurt container labels? I tried using that but the writing soon disappeared. Thanks for all the wisdom!
Good stuff, man!
Have you ever used heat mats? And do you close the mini greenhouse flaps??
I have a few questions about this. So, when do we need to uncover the seeds, mine sprouted really fast, not sure if I should still have them covered. Also how long before we need to transplant? And when do they need to be under sunlight? Thank you
I really dislike the idea of using leaf mould from the wild. My uncle did that in my grandmothers garden. One year he managed to bring back leaf mould with Bracken spores which started to take over her garden. So be careful.
I have just revisited this video as I'm sowing some seeds for Autumn/Winter salads. Are you using the shallow or deep Containerwise module trays in this sequence, and does it matter if sowing spinach and salads? Love your videos, there always something to learn.
hi huw would you water every time you sow seeds in moudle trays dose it make it easier and and would you water again once sowed after the five mins thanks nick
Sad to see that I can’t buy these propogation trays except in orders of more than 100. 🙁 was so looking forward to having robust, ecologically sound seed modules.
Great video! Thank you for making it clear 🙂
I was just wondering if you could tell me the measurements you have on the module trays? It's a bit hard to understand exactly which ones it is the have from their website. Thanks a million!
Here's an idea in firming up the compost, just use a another try on top and press it down with your hand instead of your fingers.
Those are some really good trays! Where can you find these? Does it have a specific brand?
