Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark 🙂 #garden #gardening #homesteading

  1. Hi Mark! I love your garden and especially your citrus trees. I live in Melbourne and the weather here is horrible in winter. Can you tell me what season is best to grow ginger? Can ginger grow in container? What type of soil do I need to grow ginger in pots?
    Many thanks ☺️

  2. Mark that bitter gourd is called carilie in Trinidad and to get out the bitter taste we use some coconut milk in cooking it we also fry it or make pepper sauce with it the younger the the less bitter

  3. With the bitter gourd you have to cut it into thin chips and sun dry it completely. Then deep fry it in oil a little bit. Mix the fried gourd with some cut up tomatoes, onions a few chillies and some salt and pepper and a squeeze of lemon juice. Just fantastic!!!

  4. Soak the bitter gourd in saltwater before cooking over night the bitter will spring right out then cook as normal. I love the bitterness it helps with the lymphatic system cleansing process

  5. Can you do a video on how to care for the black pepper vine [table pepper]. I have the vine and all of the leaves have dropped off, I have it in indirect sun. But I am still learning how to care for it. I do not want to kill it before learning what I need to do. Please help!!! LOL I need your success advise and anything else that will help…

  6. Sometimes I wished I lived in the subtropical so I could grow some of those fruit trees. Then I remember I'd have to live through 100-110 degree summers and I'm happy to keep with apples, pears, peaches, and cherries.

  7. Hi Mark, to answer your question on why the blood orange became orange instead of red… The answer is the cross-pollination from another orange tree that had the orange flesh, like a Valencia orange or tangerine tree. Thanks for asking, I support your channel by subscribing. Sincerely, Christie L. from California home of the Valencia orange tree I have had one too plus 36 other trees as I grew up. Do you know how I could grow alp alpha sprouts or where can I get the seeds.?.
