  1. heya mark
I tried some turmeric last spring here in the northern hemisphere. It came up, still is up by the way, but I only got one shoot about 20 cm high after these 8 months. Didn't know they were heavy feeders, so I might add some fertilizer, see if that will help a bit. Trying to overwinter and hope it'll go on next spring, and maybe even send out some flowers. Does it need to go dormant to start growing again next year ?
I only use fresh turmeric in cooking. In fact I use as much fresh herbs as I can, only in indian cuisine I use a good amount of dried herbs when I make my own curry mix, still use the fresh turmeric in it tho. So when I buy the stuff from the shoppe (toko it's called here in Amsterdam) I just freeze it, and use it straight out of the freezer. It crumbles nicely when chopped, and I add it in at the same time as the garlic, and other dried and powdered herbs, to give it a very short baking time, then add stock or water.
Cheers & thanks for the upload !

  2. Really nice Mark! I grow ginger in pots and want to try turmeric but can't find the fresh root around here. I'll try to go to Montréal in an Asian market maybe I'll find it there. Cheers, Elyse.

  3. I have quite a bit of turmeric growing in my front yard landscaping. I think I will try taking it with me when we move. I like the idea of turning it into a powder. I never knew that it was used to color butter.

  4. Thank you… Some videos suggest boiling the turmeric before drying it.  I am glad to see that is not necessary as I felt that it would remove much of the flavor and medicinal properties.
