Happy Birthday James! Cool place to go for a birthday tour!
Thank you for the tour!
Happiest of happy birthdays Mr James!
Happy Birthday James. Awesome video Patara thanks for sharing with us all.
I wonder what the Creek or Cherokee name was for Brushy Mountain?
Intro made me think of the song
Allman Brothers – Ramblin' Man
very interesting. love old history. thx for sharing. enjoyed this. fabulous. thx
Yikes! Powerful. Sorrowful. Gave me chicken skin.
Thanks for the video, I was a C.O. for 25yrs. The first two prisons I worked at were old, Auburn built in 1815 and sing sing built in 1825 by inmates from Auburn.
Great video, and the tour would be very interesting!!
I toured Brushy Mountain about 2 months ago. Very interesting! If you search YouTube you will find tons of videos showing overnight visits and capturing the “spirits” on video. Crazy stuff!
We rode atv's on the coal creek property and could see the prison from a distance looking down from one of the mountains. Would like to tour it sometime.
My Great Uncle was a prisoner there. He had shot a man for abusing his Sister. Two years later the man died. They had a speedy trial over near Crossville, TN. He hadn't been in there 9 months and died of Dysentery. He was buried in the Prison Cemetery. I don't know when it happened, but the Cemetery became overgrown with weeds. They mowed down the weeds and ALL if the MARKERS for the Graves of the Prisoners! My Great Uncle is still buried there, but only GOD knows where.
It was a BRUTAL place. That HOLE was probably the safest place in the building! You couldn't be raped, stabbed or killed while you were in the Hole!
Brushy Mountain Prison had a reputation, it wasn't a place to have fun. I'm glad that they have opened it up for people to see.
There was a large Farm associated with BMP just up the Road near Frozen Head State Park (Another beautiful place), they used to use the Prisoners to run it. They grew all the food or at least Most of it at the Farm. That had to be a blessing to all the prisoners that got to work there. Fresh air! The prisoners also learned how to make leather Purses and Wallets. There was good and bad things about the Prison.
It would be wonderful if they could locate the graves of the prisoners. You would have thought that they would have some sort of record of each burial. Thank you Both for the tour.
James we hope you enjoyed your Birthday! GOD bless
New subscriber and I really enjoyed the tour. Going back to watch some of your older videos. Mary.
We have a similar old state penitentiary in Ft. Madison, Iowa that used to have tours. Not sure if they still do. The state built a new age prison and now they get better treatment than seniors in nursing homes…quite sad. I think they should go back to the old one. And before anyone gets fussy I've had family have the privilege of staying in the old prison.
Love TN. We travel to TN at least once a year with the RV and stay in sevierville and take our girls through the Smokey Mountains. TN is so beautiful.
Happy belated birthday Mr James!
That reminds me of the prison in moundsville wv
Most of the prisoners never committed another crime after they got out, due to the condition, and discipline endured while in there, did not want to go back, Not like the prisons today which are like motels with meals. Thanks for the tour, interesting, paused the video to read when when the plaques were shone.
I remember first learning about this place in the Berkley Marathon documentary. Gotta get my family down to see it.
Ok, now I'm gonna have to take a trip and visit. That looks really interesting, and we only live about 1 1/2 hours away, in Ky. Thanks! 🙂
Very cool! We really enjoyed our tour of Alcatraz when we lived in CA.
