VIDEO: Growing Microgreens in Coconut Coir Without Nutrients? An Experiment with Kale and Broccoli

This is a side by side experiment with two trays of microgreens, one with nutrients, one with plain water, BOTH grown in coconut coir. As expected, the microgreens with the nutrient solution grew bigger and faster, but how did the microgreens with no nutrients do? A fun experiment where I get to eat the outcome!

  1. This was a fun one! I also like the idea of using the Coco coir. I could put the used medium in my outdoor garden soil too, which is preferable to disposable mediums.

  2. I add plant food on the same day I put light on sprouts and it seems to work very well. I might try adding the nutrients in the beginning this way.

  3. Great experiment, thanks for the video Tikki! One thing you didnt mention was the taste difference (if any) between the 2, i would imagine the tray with nutes would taste slightly more bitter? Would love to know, thanks!

  4. I have a question. Is it alright to use seed from the co-op store that would be sold for gardening? They don't believe they are treated, and the price is very affordable.
