VIDEO: TROUBLE on the Farm!!! Will FLOWERS Save This Market?


This week the Air Conditioner in our walk in cooler broke down, so we have to harvest all our veggies the day before the farmers market. The Employee is back thankfully, but there is also another heat wave and the smoke is still stuck in our valley. The good news is that things look amazing this week, there are lots of flower, we make a gladiolus bouquet featuring Serina’s salanova filler, and Ian arranges a bouquet finally under her watchful eye. There are lots of sunflowers harvested, and we also harvest lots of peppers and zucchini, to add to the rainbow of colours featured on our farmers market booth. Truly amazing.

We have just passed our 4 year anniversary of making Youtube videos, hooray! We have made well over 500 videos during the time, some good, others great, but every video feels like it’s own individual mountain to climb, especially these longer vlogs. We only get to bask in the relaxing feeling of a job well done for a short period of time before we ask ourselves, “ok but what’s the next video?” Keeping that in mind, if you enjoy our content, and understand the message we are trying to broadcast, then we want you to shop locally at your local farmers market. In a capitalist society you create the future with every purchase you make, so build a future that includes a robust local economy of farms, it benefits all of us. We try to show the work that farmers put in behind the scenes, the endless hours and non stop problems that arise for people like us, so that you can understand that the slightly pricier food grown locally has additional value, and those grocery store low prices can have other costs that we might not see immediately. Plus, local food is fresh and tastes great, and farmers make wearing work clothes look good!

I'm sorry but I liked what Ian had- I liked the colors and the shape and structure better (before the cosmos) I think he just didn't have all the ingredients he needed to do what he wanted… I think he just needed a few stems of some small blooms like babys breath or yarrow or just different color zinnias. But Serina was right about using the cosmos and then the statice…

  3. A lot of people love just Sunflowers in a Bouquet with some greens. Ever think about selling your abundance of Sunflowers like this.

  4. How are the sales at the house doing? I would love to see an update on that. Also, have you considered planting some grapevines along your fence, or some asparagus for spring sales?

  5. Hello! Thank you for inspiring me to grow flowers. I love your zinnias. I want to grow more next year in my little urban garden. It is amazing how much joy they give. I also admire your determination to work through bad situations and find peace in them. Purpose gives power!

  6. Your market must be crazy busy regularly in order for you to sell $1,000 or more every week! I sell at our local farmers market, and I'm happy when I walk away with at least $150. There are days when I literally only sell a few items. It feels very discouraging to put all of that effort in and not get much back for it. But I am finding other avenues to sell through the week, so I try not to let the Saturday markets get me down too much. I do know that next year I'm not doing the market. It's just too much work and stress for not a lot of benefit. Not really worth my time.

  7. There's a zuchinni fake apple pie recipe on the web that is crazy good. Also baking tons of bread and freezing is great. We make so much Italian sausage and peppers all year that I wash, slice and bag sweet peppers to freeze and use all winter. I just learned to freeze cherry tomatoes on a cookie sheet then transfer to bags to use as well (just like freezing blueberries). I think Italian families I grew up with moved extra kitchens into their basements called Summer Kitchens because they canned so much over the summer that the basement was a nice cool place to do it. (and we never threw outdated yet good cabinets away). Living with multiple generations in the house would have been very helpful for farmers so while the outdoor growing occupied the young, strong people, the older folks would do the brunt of the cooking and preserving. You have your hands full up there. I wonder if you have any time to preserve or cook/bake.

  8. The bouquets are soooooo gorgeous you guys. All the preparation of Ian doing the soil, etc., and you , Serena making all the bouquets ( less 1….. good first bouquet, Ian)
    and don't forget all you'll went thru with Serena being so sick…… you're doing well
