I was born in the early 1950s. Both my Mom & Dad were children during the Depression. My maternal Grandma lived with us until she died when I was just 10 years old. She was a single mother during the Depression. My maternal Grandpa died when my Mom was only 3. It was a hard life. I grew up learning to eat what were "strange" meats to my friends. Liver, chicken livers, chicken hearts. Things like that. Still do. No part of any protein went to waste. I always save the bones & skin from chicken or turkey to make stock to freeze. There are only 2 of us & I no longer have the stamina (severe asthma) to do canning. But I stock up on our basics when they're on sale & we grew some veggies in containers this year. I learned to sew & quilt & crochet from my Mom & Grandma. All of this was a very valuable lesson to learn, even though I didn't really appreciate it as a kid. I never had kids (my own choice) so much of what I learned will die with me. Keep teaching those kids so they can learn from you.
Amen
Say it’s your hobby. Don’t need to explain any further.
Remember during ww2 food and supplies were rationed. That’s not fun. Smart people grew gardens and kept chickens, etc.
When I was a girl visiting My Granny in Kentucky she kept chickens and had the most beautiful garden that feed her family. She wasn't called a prepper its just what you did. Its what we all should do!! Get your hands dirty. Get busy people!
Can you please tell me what you worm your Goats with? They are absolutely beautiful!!
I grew up in the Washington, D.C. area back in the '50s and '60s. No one canned or dried food. No one I knew had a backyard vegetable garden. My mother planted a tomato in her flower border every year, but that was about it.
My grandmother and grandfather were well-off. They grew peonies and roses, not vegetables.
The first time I saw a bottle of canned fruit was when a neighbor gave us a bottle of applesauce she'd made from the apples on an old tree in her front yard. I was amazed!
So, there was no prepping on that side of the family.
I never knew my father's parents because they'd both died before I was born. I imagine they might have been sort of self-sufficient but I don't know. They lived in Utah and were of pioneer stock so that probably made a difference.
I learned to can when I was 21 from a gal who was a newlywed, too. I've canned ever since. (This is in Utah.) I'm now 68. I've just finished canning 2 1/2 bushels of peaches and will start on applesauce soon.
Almost no younger women I know cans or gardens. I tried to give away fruit from our mini-orchard but there was only one woman at church who was interested. I would have leaped for free fruit when I was that age.
Looking forward to your sausage recipe
Both of my grandmothers had pantries, my paternal grandmother, Mamaw, had a huge pantry that was stocked with so many homemade can goods I think we could have eaten for years. She also had two very large chest-type deep freezers that were full. None of this food was old or went to waste. When I look back at it now both of them seemed to be "preppers" of sorts, at least that's what they would have been called today.
Canned black eyed peas this year, first time I've canned since was a kiddo helping mama a long time ago…thank you!
Those are Black Walnuts and, yes, they are tough! I'd sit on my Grandma's place and hit them with a hammer (against concrete),,….good stuff!!
This is what I say to the naysayers,….you do you and I'll do me……Lol……
Thumbs up from the Dooleys of Michigan
I said this to my co-worker today. I’m trying so hard not to pass judgement on anyone, if I give into being decisive then whatever is happening has won.
Patara, I think I might be crazy also. I like canning, dehydrating, stocking my pantry. I want my family to be ok. I garden and enjoy it. I must be out of my mind. I love it. The big wigs will be in trouble but us homesteaders will be ok. God bless
Thank you.
I swear to you and I do not swear often but you and I am our soul sisters! We think so much alike it is unreal!
My grandmother lived the same way she was raised, she spent the summer getting ready for the winter. She didnt go to the store every few days.
Thanks Patara. I really needed the reassurance. I’ve been attacked my whole life because of my independence and self reliance. I makes me more determined to survive.
I truly enjoy your channel. I will include you and your family in my prayers. You are a true blessing
Great rant! I'm admitting that I'm afraid to do the pressure canning, bad experience with pressure cooker as a child.
I do not trust but 3 people in this life. Thinking I might trust you. Thank you.
THE CONTROL FREAKS ARE THE ONES WHO DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW HOW TO DO THINGS FOR YOUR SELF BECAUSE THEY WANT TO CONTROL AND THEY CAN'T CONTROL YOU IF YOUR ABLE TO HELP YOUR SELF. THEY WANT EVERYBODY COMING TO THEM AND BEGGING THEM FOR HELP , THEY GET OFF ON TRYING TO RUN YOUR LIFE AND THEY ARE ALSO GREEDY NOT ONLY FOR POWER BUT ALSO FOR MONEY, FOR YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY.
Not only are people shamed for wanting to grow their own foods, but many cities make laws against it. Where I live many areas have rules against front yard vegetable gardens, and we're not allowed to keep chickens. Where I live in particular we're not even allowed to dry our laundry outside. The world is a bit crazy.
