VIDEO: Your Questions Answered (Live)

We want to know what all your questions are! Gardening, farming, flowers, veggies, let’s get into it! And, we are going to try and answer them while you ask them live!

It’s hard for us to read the live chat and also talk at the same time, so make sure to ask your questions in all caps (but feel free to chat in lower case), and feel free to ask it multiple times if we aren’t getting to it.

  1. I wouldn’t pull over to a roadside stand if all I could get was carrots and lettuce (and flowers). I would think that for the farm stand you might want to include a small amount of assorted veggies even if you only do the lettuce and carrots at the farmers market.

  2. Have you tried selling bunches of flowers, meaning bunches of the same things not bouquet’s? Could you put some dried flowers on top of the greenery wreathes? Do you sell lavender stalks? Or even twigs for the more Scandinavian styles.

  3. I missed your live, but enjoyed hearing all the answers to questions! I would love to hear how you keep track of what you should be sowing now, how you calculate then when it would be harvested, and then all that detail for all the different sorts of plants… how do you keep track?

  4. For your wreaths I would try doing half your product with recycled “bling” from goodwill shops for the people who want strong colour. Keeps the ethic cool and donates to a charity.❤️

  5. Instead of the live chats it seems like it would be easier to do question and answer segments in a more formal format where you can pull questions beforehand from the community section or off of previous videos. Kind of like how Garden answer do their weekly recap.

Having the questions gathered up before filming seems like it would be easier than trying to catch them as they pop up on the screen. It would also give people that cannot commit to popping on at a certain time a chance to get their questions answered.

  6. I relate to what you're talking about. It was my first year making wreaths, as well. I think Ian is right about trying the market in November. Most of my sales were in late November when its still a little nice out and people are ready to start outdoor decorating. I was able to sell 60 this year from mid Nov – mid Dec. On PEI. I hear you about the bow too. They have a cost, and I really like the natural look. Everyone has their own style, so you would need to have options. And I just assume everyone has an abundance of ribbon in their Christmas bins at home to reuse, so it's nice to encourage them to do that. Love you ornaments!

  7. If the point of CSAs is to have capital to help purchase what you need to get started and you don’t need that, why bother? It’s a lot of extra work and the last thing you need is extra work. You’re absolutely right….with the roadside stand there are bouquets available everyday.

  8. As for preserving flowers, why not try glycerin? The flowers remain as they are when fresh. Vegetable glycerin is not toxic. I’ve seen hydrangeas preserved this way and they look as nice as they were before they were cut. They don’t fall apart or wilt and shrink as they do when dried. You don’t have to cut the stems off as you do with silica. Laura on Garden Answer dried artichoke flowers this year. She did one in silica and hung one and dried and the one she hung was as nice as the silica….and could keep the stem. They were beautiful. Ever think of growing those?
