VIDEO: How To Prune Young Fruit Trees – Peach, Apple, Fig and more

In this video I will demonstrate and explain how I’m pruning my backyard fruit trees one year after planting them. I be pruning peach, nectiplum, aprium, apple, fig and more. I’ll also show some examples of last years pruning and the results of those pruning cuts.

For more information about this backyard orchard, please see my other backyard orchard videos following the full life cycle of these trees.

  1. Love the videos man, you’ve done a lot to help me start and improve my garden!! Keep doing what your doing!!! What would be your recommendations on indoor Citrus trees or bushes?

  2. Thank you for a another great video. I really like how you showed the past pruning done on all these trees so we can see the growth over time. Like the way how you explained in detail what and which branches to prune. Learned a lot and give me more confidence to prune my year old fruit trees. Thank you.

  3. I've seen suggestions when pruning indoor plants to use a little Elmer's glue and coat the top of the cut to prevent bacterial and fungal intrusion as well as prevent water loss. I wonder if that would be helpful for outdoor trees or just a minimal benefit

  4. I wish my trees grew as much as yours seem to each summer season. Do you fertilize for the peaches and apples in the first 2 years? What do you use, how much and when? I water once per week deep and slow (sometimes twice during summer – located in SoCal)

  5. Awesome video, Kyle! Thanks for all the great info, as always. Do you think there’s an advantage to leaving buds/branches that you know you don’t want (such as inward facing) and waiting until pruning day? Or is it best to pluck unwanted growth as soon as you notice it?

  6. Question for you: We have an espaliered apple tree and pear tree against a south/west facing fence. The issue is the trees are only 2 tiers (two lower horizontal branches and two upper horizontal branches) and they are only 3' tall (when purchased.) Is there a way to prune/grow them to allow for a quasi 3rd and 4th tier as our fence is over 6' tall and the trees look short against the fence and we could have double the fruit if it were twice as tall? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! (PS The leader was already cut at the upper horizontal branches connection point when we bought it…)
