Don’t Throw Away Those Old Seeds! Actually, don’t use them either… Old seeds, unknown or untrusted seeds, or just plain crops that aren’t working out. How can we know if we are the problem, or if the seeds are the problem?
Simple. Do a Seed Viability Test! A quick paper towel test under optimal conditions to tell us whether or not a batch of seeds is still good and viable. Just a few minutes of our time can save us space, soil, labor and of course money!
2022 is most definitely the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track! For more information on all your gardening questions, check out my other videos!:

So, putting seeds in a bowl and drowning them in water isn't the best method to determine viability…okay then. LOL
Im going to try the seed test today..I have some old seeds..good idea..Cheers!
Question – If seeds germinate in viability test, can you in turn plant the germinated test seeds and have seedling success?
I just subscribed to your channel yesterday. Now that I am semi retired, I want to start growing my own veggies and fruits. So glad I found your channel!
I love the bag test! Also theres rumors that Hydrogen peroxide soaking and also sowing seeds in sand helps with germination. Maybe u should try those “ tricks” .
I find that for seeds you don't have many of, it could be worth the time to just start your seeds on the paper to begin with, and then transfer the best looking sprouts to trays/pots. I just did this with 3 different pepper varieties, and I was able to select the fastest growing, earliest to emerge sprouts, and ignore the slow ones or non-viable seeds. Now I have strong seedlings and I'll never have to thin.
This obviously won't work for some seeds but if you have 20 seeds in a packet, and you only want to grow 2 or 3 plants this year, it's an easy way to ensure you're only planting the strongest seeds.
What's your take on bio char?
Great idea.As always, thanks.
Thank you. After the seeds germinate, do you have any tips on planting them on soil? Thanks
I do "bag test" to start my peppers. As soon see a sprout to soil they go. Everyone says heat mat needed buts it's not, towel warm spot small sprout, dirt = germination. I don't mind viability tests but starting some crops that need heat without mats may well this method works perfect
I've found that planting seeds by the phases of the moon makes a big difference in how long it takes for seeds to sprout.
How would you test the viability of seeds when you only get 10 seeds in the packet and not waist all of the seeds in the viability test?
Hey Jeff thanks for the Garden Slowy!!!
This was how my Mom sprouted everything way back….the wet paper towel. Love the part about how it's probably our fault when seeds don't grow, lol!!
Excellent Advice!
After you are done testing the seeds, do you plant those that sprouted?
