Self Sufficient Me is based on our small 3-acre property/homestead in SE Queensland Australia about 45kms north of Brisbane – the climate is subtropical (similar to Florida). I started Self Sufficient Me in 2011 as a blog website project where I document and write about backyard food growing, self-sufficiency, and urban farming in general. I love sharing my foodie and DIY adventures online so come along with me and let’s get into it! Cheers, Mark šŸ™‚

  1. Education is the word. We don't really know what real food is supposed to look. I would love to learn about food that doesn't look perfect but is perfectly alright to buy.

  2. What's best Australian website to buy banana trees found it hard to buy them at our local bunnies and its crazy when you look at how much we spend on them at woolworths. Love your videos mate

  3. Hey mark! When you say ripen fully on the tree, do you mean wait for the entire bunch to turn yellow? I have a habit of harvesting too early cos i get paranoid that critters will get to them before i do !

  4. When I was little, we had a Peach tree in our yard (Michigan, USA). My God, I remember how amazing those Peaches tasted! Juicy, sweet-peachy flesh with a great texture. Fresh from the tree, ripe and ready.

I haven't had a good peach in decades. The Peaches in the store aren't even Peaches in my opinion. Bland, no taste, garbage texture, sometimes almost "dry" and grainy.

    Thanks for the video.

  5. Hey Mark, where'd you get those new Banana plants from? I'm near Cairns.

I got several varieties from blue sky but most of them were riddled with weevils and died, the ones that survived haven't grown (my red daca, planted 2 years ago, is about 3cm tall!). No surprise that blue sky went out of business.

  6. I had a dwarf red Ducati sent from blue sky tissue culture before they closed shop, the first bunch was not red at all…..have I been tricked or should the red appear when plant has aged?

  7. The same bird sounds that are in your video are also coming from my yard, I thought I was going crazy haha. Very Qld! Another great video, nothing better than home grown bananas – taste AND texture.

  8. You are so entertaining to watch and I have learned alot from you because of it so thank you for the effort of making it fun! P.S. Waiting for those raised beds to come over to South Africa Lol

  9. All true. I wish I could grow bananas in 9b Sacramento but alas they would fail. I agree on the comments about visual fruit/veg. We eat what we grow, even if it looks imperfect. Get a knife, cut a bit off, toss it in the compost for the next go-around. Thanks for the vid.

  10. Business Insider has done a few videos on banana farmers around the world. I think mostly the current issues arising are climate change and diseases. Bananas don't grow from seed, they have mothers and babies. So generally all the banana trees on their farms are genetically identical and when a disease is introduced it practically wipes out the farm. Also the bananas grown 50-60 plus years ago where most likely not the type of bananas in the markets today…genetically speaking. Anyone curios about it might want to check those videos out. If this helps in your banana eating, Happy munching!

  11. Gros Michel or ā€œBig Mikeā€ bananas were better tasting & widely sold in the 50s but were decimated by ā€œPanama diseaseā€ caused by a fungus, Fusarium oxysporum, . It was replaced by the fungus resistant Cavendish variety commonly sold today.. not nearly as tasty. If youā€™re lucky enough to live in a region that isnā€™t endemic for the fungus you might be able to grow the Gros Michel variety.. and they are working on a resistant variety as well. Enjoy your channel very much, cheers.
