VIDEO: She's trying to chase me out of the garden! | VLOG

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. It does my heart so much good to watch your videos. Thank you for making the time to share some of your day with me and all the other viewers! I know you are busy and I appreciate your commitment to family and farm and fans!.

  2. Hello Jess and Miah Sowards and family love how your gardens are looking. You and Miah have done such a good job making your new farm a home. Have a good evening full of Good Blessings for you and Miah and your family from a viewer in Toronto Ontario Canada

  3. I feel ya. I have a robin's nest in the eve of my covered porch. Every time I go outside, she yells at me and hovers nearby, especially if it both my hubby and I out there enjoying the spring weather. Her eggs have hatched and I can see directly into the nest from my back kitchen window which is just a foot away from the nest – I peek around the curtain so as not to disturb her or them. I'm joyful for getting to see them so up close and personal and I talk to her every time I'm out there with a soothing voice, hoping that's she'll come to understand that we are not a threat – but, she is wild, so I don't have unrealistic expectations for that. Nature at its finest.

  4. Jess Fish is high nitrogen. Native Americans put fish under corn beans and Squash, especially corn which is a high nitrogen feeder. Your tomato is evidence of lots of nitrogen, Lots of green growth. OMG how cool do not move those eggs. It's easy to live with them. They are not mad. They are afraid and are trying to draw you away from the nest. Green growth will help them calm down., I know very big farmers who put stakes in their hay and grain fields to mark the nests so they can avoid them when harvesting. Imagine driving a combine around a killdeer nest. So glad you are getting your golden hour back. I wish you could send us some of your heat. I do not think we have had one day yet where the high has reached 75F. Right now at 9 PM it is 46 F. Everything is growing but soooooo slow. Can't wait to see you gardens mature. Bless you.

  5. I had a family of dark eyed juncos lay eggs in my grass twice last year. I ended up putting chicken wire around the nesting sites to keep the local fauna out and so we didn't accidentally mow over it. It was fun to watch them grow up.

  6. I’m laying down with my son watching videos to soothe him and he says “mommy I wanna watch garden movies” and got so excited when he heard Jess’ voice! ❤️

  7. Well Jess, I had a feeling this was the bird the County ordered us to stay out of the area of the PT Pit until the eggs hatched and the momma and babies all left. Although Killdeer, a species of plover that can be found along water and inland, are not endangered, they are protected by the Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA) in the United States. Apr 9, 2019

  8. I've looked for three weeks for a kiddy pool for my growbags to keep them well watered. I stalked everywhere I could think of within 30mins of my house. My husband was looking for a fan on Lowe's website and just checked for me. The site said they had 32 so he ordered one. When we picked it up there was none on the floor, but the site said they still had 25. I have my pool, but this is something you may want to try.

  9. You can actually put some whole kitchen scraps under your plants (uncomposted) as well…one of the other gardeners I watch has done that with his potatoes and they all came up AMAZINGLY!

  10. The fish from your pond might be okay but viewers should beware: fish are bioaccumulators, this means throughout their lives they uptake things like lead, PFAS & related chemicals, etc. that are harmful to human life and can forever contaminate your garden soil. If you have not researched your local fish population for warnings about consumption, don't use them in your gardens.

Recently learned that the smelt fish population in the Great Lakes (& connected rivers) is contaminated with PFAS-related chemicals, and people are being told to limit consumption to one meal per month. To be safe, I wouldn't eat them at all, nor put them in the garden.

  11. Fish is awesome. My dad was a gardener and spent sat and Sunday out in the ocean catching fish. He would filet what we would eat and burry the rest in the garden and even dug around his bushes and trees to burry them under those as well. They did so beautifully ❤️
