Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. This is superb intel! 'Experience' seems to be our main learning tool. Sorry you were the laboratory, but that was probably not a coinkidink, since you have a hefty following. I was introduced to mycellium in a class at our local JC–we're in a spectacular spot for hunting the edible fruit (western side of the Cascade Range, Oregon). Biblio suggestion: "Mycellium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save the World."–Paul Stamets, 2005. Ten Speed Press. He's written others, but that one's probably the most accessible for newbies. Paul has the rep of being a rather ornery cuss, but as a mycology adept, he's at the 'top of his game.'

  2. I have been using mushroom compost for the past 7 years in my garden, and never have use other fertilizer in my little organic garden (900) square feet). Every year I keep replenishing as the soil recessed each year in zone 5 due to the coolness..
You won’t regret using it, my plants are humungous, especially broccoli.. Good luck..

  3. I was having issues in a newly added garden bed this year and thought it was me. Took me a while to realize the issue was the same as yours. I never would have guessed that organic soil would have been this large of a problem, but here it is. As unfortunate this problem is, I am thankful to be learning more about it from you, Will, and Olga. With all the doom in the world today, it is good to know that we have answers to the problems.

  4. Love that you are sharing this. Helga was so sweet. I feel you two are gonna do this. I have faith. Just watching both of you at the mushroom farm. The excitement was awesome. Your ocean of rain drops is sure growing. Take care and God bless both of you.

  5. We have a large mushroom farm in Oklahoma that sells their mushroom soil after the second growth. They sell it in bulk very reasonable. I have bought a trailer load (4’ x 8’ x 15”) for around $35.00. A lot of truck gardeners buy the “compost” and mix it in with their soil. Works wonders.

  6. I found the same issue with even the potting soil I used to sow my seeds. I still have issues with my outdoor tomatoes which were sown indoors in bad soil. Tragic. Thanks for this knowledge

  7. You can also buy mushrooms at the store, blend them up in water, add that to more water, and pour it into your medium. It's slightly less quick than spawn, but it allows you to spread it over a larger area (direct sowing in straw or a wood chip pile).

  8. Thank you so much for helping me motivating me. This is my third year growing in my back yard I'm so pumped, I'm 65 and getting ready to retire and now I can eat healthier with less Income ❤️❤️❤️
