Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I'm so glad Miah gets to have horses again. When I first started watching your channel, every time I would hear you say Miah's name reminded me of my OTTB mare Maya that I rescued. I hope to one day find her and have her on my family's up and coming homestead. She too had an accident from loading onto a trailer and split her forehead open down to the bone. Luckily after the vet stitched her up, she healed well. God Bless you and your family <3

  2. How many Hands is the Mare she looks quite tall, I thought Bosco was going to jump that fence so do not teach him to jump (I am an old horsewoman) who will never lose her passion for Horses. Good choice with both horses. Great Video Guys. Cheers Denise- Australia

  3. Your horses are so beautiful, Miah. I'm truly happy for you. Too bad she arrived late in the day, but I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them both in future. Loved it when Bosco ran up to her. I'm also happy for the horses, to be in a place where they'll be well taken care of, & loved. They'll bring great happiness to the family too. I love that they got to move there together.

Whatever caused the curling, it seemed limited to the tips of some of the slightly larger (older?) seedlings. Does it seem to be still occurring? I'm guessing that if you cut that damaged growth off, (& give it to the chickens), it will spur plenty of new "normal" growth, now that the plants have acclimated to the new, enriched soil & the environment of that greenhouse.

It may have been transplant shock that could've stunted the earliest growth if they were planted with some growth at an earlier stage. Also, a change in pH alone might cause transplant shock, as can direct sunlight when a seedling has not yet rooted in & started producing more leaves yet, with vigor.

Weak, leaning, and any slightly overgrown & yellowing while waiting to get planted, indoor grown seedlings that haven't been introduced to the direct sun gradually would be more vulnerable. A seedling might be weakened by a cluster of changes at one time.

The rest of the plants looked healthy & have good color. The amended soil is likely doing its job, so any chance of toxicity has been getting diluted since they were planted, by the living organisms in the improved soil all around their roots now, & by being watered & rained on.

  4. Awesomeness!!! I love how your farm is evolving and growing. You are changing up the flocks and going with the flow . I love horses and am excited to learn while in the classroom. Thank you for taking us along with on the journey . I actually said out loud today to friends . I want a homestead to grow and feed the hungry. I am following in your footsteps and entertaining the possibility of the dream. Thank you for encouragement and your faith. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

  5. We had a field of wheat that had damage from a neighbor field. It was windy and they sprayed. It was someone who rents the land and not local. Things happen. Beautiful horses! So majestic seeing them run!

  6. Are they planting loblolly pines on the property they clear cut near you? I ask because they will clear cut, then spray an herbicide before they plant the pines. They did it on the 100 acres behind our property. It was all sprayed by hand too. A group of guys with backpack sprayers walked the property and sprayed. Def made me sad.

  7. The horses are beautiful. I appreciate horses from a distance as I am not comfortable being near them. However, I'm glad there are people like y'all who are able to love and care for them.

  8. I dont know if you get the psylid bug over there, but they love nightshades here. They make the plants look like they have herbicide damage, the only difference being they have a crystal like set of lumps under the leaf. They are a pain in the proverbial and I have had to work with it. We still get produce but not as much as plants without. I find that plants grown from the seeds of psylid damaged plants are more resilient. Until next time xx

  9. So glad you decided to take both horses. We have a single horse living down the road from us, every time I drive by he is standing at the fence looking across the street at his two neighbors. They really are herd animals.

  10. It made me giggle when the new horse immediately set out establishing her dominance when she got in the field. You go girl! I’m sure she’ll heal up well under Miah’s care.
It’s a shame about ur plants in the high tunnel on that one side. I’d eat em too, tbh. I’ve probably eaten plenty pesticide/herbicide residues by now and yours would have way less exposure than the store produce given that you don’t purposefully add any.
