Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. My pressure canner is strictly a weighted canner it doesn’t have a dial I used to have one with a dial and I thought I couldn’t live without it but I discovered that I worry a lot less just going by the weight and time.

  2. I just started Victorian Farm again, love that show. Shopping seasonal veggies and canning them is a great way to master the craft, save money and stock the pantry.

  3. doing carrots tonight! store bought carrots. carrots ready but need to go feed bees I just got them. wanna be sure they aren't hungry while adjusting here. and ducklings big night… moving in with geese and chickens!!!!! Found someone local to get raw cow milk! It's great to be making cheese again! I got to milk "DAISY" the other day. I had goats so MUCH harder to milk. Daisy was easy!

  4. Jess, you would like the channel Great Depression Cooking that features Clara. Once in a while her grandson will post some not before seen footage. Clara was such a treasure to watch.

  5. My mom is in her 101st year and was born in Scotland. Her parents lived And worked on an estate, grandma was the cook and grandpa was the game keeper. Right now mom is in a nursing home and doing very well, her biggest concern right now is the amount of food that goes to waste at the nursing home where she resides. We have had many conversations about the rationing during the war and she said it’s some thing she did for four years and that she never gets over. Fortunately they lived in the country and had it much better than people in the city, they could grow their vegetables and they had chickens, as well as resources the estate could offer. They had to give a certain amount of eggs to The war effort and they were put in a liquid called water glass that sealed the pores of the eggs so they could be transported. I feel so lucky to pass these Stories on.

  6. I am having issues in two of my new raised beds, where nothing is doing well…. I used compost from Lowes….So I am really looking forward to your process for trying to make the compost not need to sit for 4 years.

  7. Love this!! When I was learning to can and didn’t have a garden, I just posted on FB every couple of weeks that if anyone had extra fruit, I’d take it off their hands and give them back half of anything I made. So many people have fruit trees they don’t know what to do with! I would get buckets and buckets of fruit to process and my friends would get to actually enjoy the fruit growing in their yard they would otherwise leave to the birds.

  8. Thank you for this video! It reminds me I need to get out more. lol I'm such an introvert. It looked like a lot of fun. I have rendered pork fat into lard, but I have yet to try tallow. I love that little pampered chef crock you have! How unique! I have done water bath canning in the past, and have a presto pressure canner, but I'm nervous to use it! lol I'm willing to try though, I'm sure it's not as daunting as it feels. So far jams and pickles are my favorite to make.
