Perfect timing. I planted Scarlett runner beans and only half came up. I will do this for the replants and the other beans & sunflowers I am getting ready to plant.
I hold them in my mouth before planting. The seeds soak in the DNA from your saliva and then produce t nutrients your body is needing. (Reference Anastasia Ringing Cedars of Russia)
what about with something like an Umbel family like dill where it’s technically a fruit not a seed?
I have so much trouble trying to grow dill. I only got one plant to come up. I then started some indoors and put outside and they suddenly died, I think because of them drying out despite me watering everyday. The same happened to my lovage, which is also Umbel family. Parsley and cilantro I had no issues.
Only do this with hard-shelled seeds like luffa, sunflowers, beans, etc. And be careful not to cut too much off! Just a bit of the seed hull.
Thanks for showing this! A fantastic tip and just in time as I put pumpkin seeds in.
WHY have you not mentioned THIS before????????
Definitive slap my forehead moment.

It's called scarification
I will remember to do that next time. I soaked my seeds (larger ones like beans) in water for about 15 minutes while I was preparing the soil.
Do you find reduced germination rates from accidental damage?
Just soak your seed for 12 hours and they will all come up
Can’t believe I’ve never heard about this. Super smart
Great advice! Thanks!
Cutting, scoring etc.
I grew some Cana lilies from seed this year.
Took me 5 minutes with sandpaper to get through the rock hard seed coat.
Thanks for this tip, I have problems with zucchini seeds taking forever or just rotting this really helps
Nice! I’m going to try this

Or you could just soak them a few hours. Then they get a good level of certain water when planted, helping ensure they sprout quickly as reliably.
or you can soak the seeds in water 3-24 hours in a cup.
