Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. I like the idea of a climbing rose . My favorite climber is a Joseph's Coat . I love roses and you can never have too many roses . The birds have planted sunflowers everywhere for me . They look gorgeous next to the plants I planted on purpose. I have a lot of volunteer plants thanks to the birds.
I love the "triplets" . I have had tomatoes do that and other fruits .Now I know what it is called . Thank you .

  2. Curious about what shrub you are growing in the perennial garden, closest to the greenhouse by the green stalks. There appears to be a row of them on each side and they look to be filling it out really nicely 🙂 ps. I absolutely love your videos (been a longtime viewer but never really commented) and rewatching these in the winter time is one of my favorite ways to get through the rainy weather.

  3. I LOVE all your videos! Was wondering if you could leave a few of the contaminated tomatoes while you grow the other things around them. It would be interesting to see if at any point you'll see a difference in the tomatoes. It's soo sad to see a crop fail but also soo interesting to experiment with different ideas. Thank you for that!

  4. Thank you for taking us along with your journey! Love love love that garden tours are back and can't wait to see what all happens with the contaminated soil. Blessings and love ❤️

  5. I love to learn from you. Take a look at off the grid with Doug and Stacey’schannel…she shows you how to make a natural fertilizer…I was amazed. That might help the soil rebound?

  6. Jess your gardens are beautiful. Thank you for all the helpful information. I was thinking about you this morning walking through my garden frustrated with the many seeds that didn’t germinate and having no rain for 2 months. “ this is my classroom” I thought. I water when dry or daily as it seems there is something keeping my usual beautiful garden from growing much food this year. Frustrating but will plant my 3rd round of cukes and squash tomorrow. Took me 3 rounds of planting seeds to get green beans. The tomatoes are doing great. Sigh…

  7. SUGGESTION: MYCORRHIZAE – John Kohler from Growing Your Greens on YouTube has a few excellent videos describing the benefits. You're only missing that and rock dust. But for soil remediation I would definitely recommend the mycorrhizae

  8. I think you need a fantasy garden
Fairies, gnomes, Lord of the Rings type of little people (can never remember what they are called) , leprechaun, some random herbs, left to grow kinda wild, as their forest. A little house under moss, maybe a small stream running through the whole thing…

  9. Jess! I’m so curious if you could do a time relapse of the zucchini in the last day or 2 it needs to be harvested? Just a fun thought.

Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden with us. It makes me smile every time I watch these videos

  10. Celosia can be boiled or steamed and eaten as a side dish or combined with other vegetables in soups and stews along with their tender stems. Celosia is also eaten in Indonesia and India.

  11. When digging rows to plant this spring I dug up at least a 1000 of the japanese beetle larvae and either squished them or threw them into a small bucket of ammonia. The japanese beetle almost wiped out my raspberries, apple tree, bush beans and sweet corn silk last year which is the first year I have ever seen them in my garden. I ordered 2 back pack sprayers, one for me and one for my sisters, and I purchased 3 different kinds of nematodes and sprayed the ground of my garden and surrounding lawn with them after I was done planting. The nematodes 'take care of' a whole host of unbeneficial larvae and insects. So far as of today I have not seen any japanese beetles feeding on my raspberries…fingers crossed it stays that way!
