VIDEO: FULL Roots and Refuge Garden Tour | Episode 3, 2022

*******************

Hey ya’ll, I’m Jess from Roots & Refuge Farm

Welcome to a place that feels like home. A small farm with a big family. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, grab some coffee and visit awhile.

There was a time that all I wanted in the world was a little farm where I could raise my family and grow our food. Now, that is exactly what exists outside my door. In watching it unfold, a new dream was formed in my heart – to share this beautiful life with others and teach them the lessons we’ve learned along the way. Welcome to our journey, friend. I am so glad you’re here.

  1. My Sweet T (lol) and I are in the brink of a family vacay..BUT the peas are starting to come off! And our old dog won’t like the kennel! And our other old dog isn’t social, healthy or boardable…bless her. The garden needs water! Oh vey! All is in my Sisnlaws hands!

  2. My hummingbirds are one of my greatest delights! It's been really fun to plan and plant an area specifically for them. I hope you guys had a blast on your vacation and that your first tomato sandwich of the season was sublime.

  3. I really like the idea of calling that high tunnel redemption . Hope, purpose and intention rolled into one. Love how lush your garden is and so amazed at your progress this year. I moved to my forever home 1 month ago. I have 3 garden spaces going and lots of composting started. I have a shorter season but I want to get as much done as possible so next year is much more lush and I can start adding livestock.

  4. Last year was the first time I had ever eaten okra raw! I have been gone so much but planted some late! Some are up and I can’t wait to eat it raw again! We are in South Dakota so I sure hope they make it. It is going to be hot so they should love it!

  5. I read that borage keeps Japanese beetles off your raspberries so I planted it in between my raspberry plants and it hasn't worked so far. The beetles are on my raspberries, apple tree, sweet corn and green beans. 🙁 I go out every day and pluck as many as I can for an hour or so and drown them in some soapy water.

  6. Borage is a wonderful herb. Make it into tea for treating depression and as a blood purifier. It also increases milk production in lactating mothers. Have a great vacation!

  7. How the heck do you keep the bunnies and squirrels from digging up your sunflower seeds and eating off the plants as they start to grow. I got Steve's sunflowers during his $100 fundraiser and I am afraid to plant them since the seeds from the store bought ones don't even get the chance to grow and if they do the plants get eaten off. I tried starting plants indoors and transplanting them out when they got to a bigger size but the bunnies ate them too!

  8. We put our rhubarb on the shady side of the house and close to the house so it would not freeze in the winter. We lived in Wyoming where winters are severe. They did well there.

  9. Oh yum! I love my okra in the same way too! It tastes soooo good fresh from the garden…..or prepared however!
I really appreciate learning tips from you! My son and I really love the black light for hornworms—and scorpions! I hope I’m not speaking too soon, but I haven’t had any hornworms yet this year, amazingly…..but scorpions? Oh yeah. This is the Arizona desert, after all.
Question; what are your scariest critters in your garden/yard there? Snakes? Any bears?

  10. Hey Jess, wanted to ask if you're primarily gardening independently or do you have helping hands? I'm asking because there are moments when I'm getting overwhelmed with my large gardens Todo list & upkeep in addition making time for other(s) things.
Will you be having helpers harvest y'all's fruit etc?! Bless You and thank you for the Tour
