Ive got volunteer tomatos growing and producing fruit (in pots!). Nothing close to summer of course of but theyre doing amazing since were getting sub zero temps pretty constantly at night. And hardly ever over 20C
I would have saved the cobs for broth let the stalks dry out for cane stakes and crushed the leaves for mulch.
I think it has been very hard for growers the past few years, knowing whether we are going to get a wet or very hot growing season.
Last year in the UK, it was very wet. Our containers survived better than the beds. This year it is vice versa.
The last time we saw decent snow, ie over a ft was in 2011 in London. Over 3ft we are looking at the 80's where we live.
I think we are a zone 9 now, which surprised me. We are in a heatwave atm. Expecting 35-43c on Sunday. A rare amber warning in England has been announced for extreme heat. A 2018 report has said only 0.5% of homes have AC.
It's been high temps at night too. London and the SE England haven't had decent rain for weeks, so our water butts have been dry. So glad that we increased the amount of water butts but still not enough rain.
Our courgettes and garlic are terrible this year.
My family went out to Sydney in the early 1970's. My Nan and my dad's eldest sister and brother. Only my Aunty communicates with us, since my nan passed. She lives in Shell cove. Last i heard of my family was they were Beverly Hills, Miranda, that way. I hope that they are ok with the floods.
Yeh it helps when your temps are much higher than Sydney. You're in a t shirt and we're wearing 2 jumpers in the daytime
Mark, what is the wire grid you put over the shredded corn at the end? Is that to keep it from blowing off? Will you plant something else in that bed for winter? Nice to hear talk of winter. In Florida here where it's still 90+ degrees and hard to get anything done in the garden! Heard about the floods in Sydney & wondered how you were doing. Thanks for the great videos! If your averaging 68 degrees Fahrenheit, you should be able to extend your growing season easily with a high tunnel or green house.
That's what some folks here in the US do and I'm not talking just in the south. Some in the northern areas as well. There is of course, a limit as to how much protection you will get when the temps drop below freezing.
But, is it worth you going through the expense of building one to see how much of an extension you will gain in your area?

The last two months have been full of cold snaps in SEQ. I think this would've been more successful if you'd had last year's more mild Winter.

When you opened that little corn at 4:30 I chuckled because I thought it hadn’t been pollinated at all. When you turned it and showed the 6 random kernels I got a full belly laugh. Sorry to laugh at your misfortune but that was too cute. Lol

Corn needs certain warm temperatures for pollination successful. Looks like you did get a couple of warm days for fertilization but far from perfect.
All that rain may have not been good for pollination either. You might try Yukon Chief sweet corn Small ears and only 3ft to 4ft tall but ready in 55 days.

Hey mate, what you should do is plant in the early/mid September and then harvest 2nd week of December and plan again just before Christmas. I do this in Brisbane and get 2 full crops every summer, depending on how long you let them go for that is, we grow it for tamales
